This holiday is an opportunity to remember the Michigan soldiers of the 102nd Regiment U.S. Colored Troops who fought in the Civil War. Their original battle flag bearing the words “All Men are Born Free and Equal” remains part of the Capitol’s Battle Flag Collection.

While the doors at the top of the Capitol’s east steps are now closed, they were originally intended to serve as the building’s main entrance. 🏛️

The first floor hallway behind these doors was designed to make a grand first impression. Iron columns were painted to resemble luxurious marble, while the coffered ceiling added depth and elegance to the space.
