Some parts of Michigan are exempt from the new work requirements for food assistance — and others are not. Here’s how to tell what applies to you.

If you permanently reside in one of these exempt counties or cities, you do not need to fulfill new work requirements and will receive SNAP benefits as usual:

📍 Counties: Alcona, Alger, Arenac, Cheboygan, Iosco, Iron, Luce, Mackinac, Montmorency, Oceana, Ogemaw, Oscoda, Presque Isle, Roscommon, Schoolcraft

🏙️ Cities: Bay City, Detroit, Eastpointe, Flint, Jackson, Saginaw
If you do NOT permanently reside in one of these areas, you may need to meet work requirements or meet an exemption. Many people still meet exemptions based on caregiving, health, school, and many more.

If you do not meet the requirements or meet an exemption, your SNAP benefits may be limited to three months every three years.

You may have heard that there are new work requirements for SNAP food assistance for many adults in Michigan. But “work requirements” doesn’t just mean a job. You can meet the requirements through:

💼 Working at least 20 hours/week (or 80 hours/month)

📚 Job training through an MDHHS-approved employment and training program (Michigan Works!)

🤝 Participating in community service through an approved nonprofit

If you do not meet the requirements or meet an exemption, your SNAP benefits may be limited to three months every three years.

Not sure what counts? MDHHS can help explain your options. 📞 Call your local MDHHS office today to learn about exemptions and next steps: 1-844-464-3447

Adults may now need to meet new work requirements for food assistance to keep their benefits. This affects people ages 18 - 64 who are not currently working at least 20 hours/week (or 80 hours/month) and do not meet an exemption. If you do not meet the requirements or meet an exemption, your SNAP benefits may be limited to three months every three years.

This does not mean your benefits will stop. Many exemptions exist for people living in certain areas, people living with children, caregivers, those with health issues, and more. But you may need to take action.

These new requirements (known as Time Limited Food Assistance, or TLFA) are more detailed than the general work requirements. Not everyone who meets an exemption under general work requirements will meet exemptions for TLFA.

Did you receive a work requirement notice letter from MDHHS about your SNAP benefits? This letter does not mean your benefits will stop right away. Here’s what to do next:

1️⃣ Call your local MDHHS office at 1-844-464-3447. They can check if you meet an exemption and explain your next steps.
2️⃣ Explore potential exemptions. Many people are exempt due to caregiving, health, school, pregnancy, or other reasons. MDHHS will share the full list of exemptions and see if you meet any of them.
3️⃣ Learn your work options. If you’re not exempt, MDHHS can explain work, training, or volunteer opportunities to maintain your benefits.
4️⃣ Update your contact info. Make sure your information is up-to-date in your MI Bridges Registered User account so you don’t miss updates (michigan.gov/MIBridges) as well as with your local MDHHS office.

If you do not meet the requirements or meet an exemption, your SNAP benefits may be limited to three months every three years.

Call your local MDHHS office to learn more.
