Join the City of Detroit Ombudsman Office, Detroit Civil Rights, Inclusion and Opportunity Department, and the Michigan Department of Civil Rights for Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges, a community learning session for the deaf and hard of hearing community on Tuesday, June 2. Kenya Lowe, Director of the Division of Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing, will be speaking on the panel.

The goal of this event is to address the systemic barriers that Detroit communities face and ensure that the needs of all residents are acknowledged and addressed.

Today, we remember the victims and survivors of the Tulsa Race Massacre and reflect on its lasting impact on civil rights in America.

The destruction of Tulsa’s Greenwood District exposed the violent realities of racial discrimination and the systemic barriers Black communities faced in pursuing safety, economic opportunity, and equal protection under the law.

More than a century later, Greenwood’s legacy continues to shape national conversations about civil rights and justice. Remembering Tulsa underscores why strong civil rights protections matter and why the ongoing pursuit of fairness, accountability, and equal opportunity remains essential today.
