Press Release update!
On September 27, 2026, at approximately midnight, the City of Lapeer Police Department and Lapeer Fire Department responded to two commercial fires.
As the Fire Department was arriving at the Golden Arrow, dispatchers advised officers and firefighters of another fire alarm at the Marguerite de Angeli Library. The library is a beloved structure with significant history in the Lapeer community.
City of Lapeer police officers quickly responded to the library and were able to extinguish the fire before it spread into the building. The City of Lapeer Fire Department, with assistance from the Michigan State Police, quickly determined that both fires had been intentionally set.
That morning, the City of Lapeer Police Department began an extensive investigation into both arson cases. This investigation was a complete team effort involving multiple members of the department and outside agencies.
The Detective Bureau conducted extensive neighborhood canvassing, gathered and reviewed digital evidence, identified a suspect, conducted the interview, and completed the investigative report in a timely manner for the Prosecutor’s Office.
Once the suspect was identified, police officers worked 24/7 in order to locate and take the suspect into custody without incident.
I am incredibly proud of the determination, dedication, and hard work demonstrated by everyone involved in this case. From our patrol officers and detectives to our dispatchers, and partner agencies, this investigation was a true example of teamwork and commitment to the Lapeer community.
