September 11, 2001, forever changed our nation and redefined what it means to answer the call.

Today, we pause to honor the memory of every life lost, and reflect on the incredible heroism shown by the paramedics, EMTs, firefighters, police officers, and dispatchers who stood on the front lines and acted without hesitation on what became one of the most memorable days in US history.

As first responders, we carry their memory with us every day, on every shift, in every station across our county. We promise to uphold the legacy of service and duty they left behind.

🚨 IMPORTANT SAFETY ALERT 🚨

Our crews have recently responded to an increased number of emergency calls related to generator misuse. Portable generators are great backup options during power outages, but improper use can quickly lead to deadly Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning, electrocution, or severe fires.
Please take a moment to review these critical generator safety tips to protect your family and neighbors:

🏡 1. Location is Everything
20-Foot Rule: Always keep generators at least 20 feet away from your home.
Outdoors Only: NEVER operate a generator inside a garage, home, shed, or enclosed space, even with doors/windows open.
Keep Clear: Ensure 3–4 feet of clear space above and around all sides for proper ventilation, and direct exhaust away from doors, windows, and vents.

⚡ 2. Safe Electrical Use
Use Heavy-Duty Cords: Always use grounded, damage-free extension cords rated for the total wattage being used.
GFCI Protection: Use GFCI outlets or adapters to prevent electrical shock.
Plug Direct: Plug appliances directly into the generator or use a heavy-duty cord. NEVER plug a generator directly into a home wall outlet—this causes dangerous "backfeeding," which can electrocute utility workers and neighbors.
Keep Dry: Never operate a generator in wet conditions or rain without proper cover designed for generators. Always let it cool before refueling!

💀 3. Carbon Monoxide (CO) Safety
Carbon Monoxide is an invisible, odorless killer that can be fatal in as little as 5 minutes.

Symptoms to Watch For:
🌀 Dizziness
🤕 Headaches
🤢 Nausea
😴 Unexplained fatigue or sleepiness
Working Alarms: Ensure you have working CO detectors outside sleeping areas and on every level of your home.

⚠️ If you suspect CO poisoning or experience symptoms: Get to fresh air immediately, do NOT re-enter the building, and call 911 right away!

Please check in on elderly neighbors, families with young children, and anyone who may need extra support in the next few days as many of us are without power, food, water, shelter, and other vital supplies.

It’s almost race day! 🏁

In preparation for the XINSURANCE Great Lakes Grand Prix, we held a 3 day training alongside the Michigan City Fire Department at Washington Park Beach to go over protocols/procedures, staging, and UTV operations to ensure seamless communication and coordination during beach rescues.

Operating utility vehicles (UTVs) on loose sand requires precise handling, tight maneuvering skills, and quick reaction times. Our crews ran maneuvers through obstacle courses, practiced tight turns, and navigated sandy shorelines to ensure we can reach anyone in need quickly and safely during an emergency for the racers, workers, and the general public in attendance for this weekend.

We hope everyone stays safe and has fun while enjoying the excitement of the boat races out on beautiful Lake Michigan. Remember to stay hydrated, keep an eye on your surroundings, & follow all safety guidelines while visiting! 🌊🚤
