Last week, our K9 teams traveled to Cheyenne to compete in the USPCA trials and both teams finished in the Top 5.

We're incredibly thankful for the hard work, dedication, and countless training hours put in by Deputy Lubbers and K9 Mattes and Deputy Fourman and K9 Goose. Their commitment to excellence is evident every day, both in competition and while serving Albany County.

Congratulations on a job well done! 🏆🐕💙

Multi-Agency Search and Rescue Teams Respond to Fatal Incident Near Falls Overlook

Albany County, Wyoming

On May 29, 2026, at approximately 7:47 p.m., Albany County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to the Falls Overlook area on Forest Service Road 307 after receiving a 911 text message requesting assistance for an individual who was unconscious and experiencing difficulty breathing. Due to the remote location and lack of cellular service, emergency communication was conducted through text messaging.

Deputies responded immediately and requested assistance from Albany County Sheriff Search and Rescue (ACSSAR), Lifeline Air Medical, and Classic Air Medical. While en route, deputies received information regarding a second 911 text message from a different phone number advising that the individual was no longer breathing, CPR had been in progress for approximately ten minutes, and the individual was trapped in the river. Based on the updated information, the Albany County Sheriff's Office requested activation of additional rescue resources, including a water rescue response.

Upon arrival, deputies equipped with high-angle rescue gear located the hiking party and learned that Michael Werkeiser, 56, had slipped while descending steep terrain into a narrow crevice, falling into Middle Fork Little Laramie River. The creek was flowing rapidly in the area, and it is believed Werkeiser sustained a head injury during the fall, rendering him unconscious.

A member of the hiking group immediately entered the water in an attempt to save Werkeiser and remained with him in the creek until emergency responders arrived.

Personnel from the Albany County Sheriff's Office High Angle Rescue Team, Albany County Search and Rescue, Laramie Fire Department, and Centennial Volunteer Fire Department coordinated a complex rescue operation. Responders rappelled approximately 30 feet into Mullen Creek to reach and recover both individuals.

EMS evaluated both subjects and Werkeiser was pronounced deceased at the scene. The other subject refused medical treatment and was released.

Agencies involved in the response included the Albany County Sheriff's Office and High Angle Rescue Team, Albany County Sheriff Search and Rescue, Lifeline Air Medical, Centennial Volunteer Fire Department, Laramie Fire Department/EMS, and LARC Dispatch.

The Albany County Sheriff's Office extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Michael Werkeiser. We also recognize the extraordinary actions of the individual who entered the water in an effort to save another's life, as well as the dedication and professionalism of the first responders who worked in challenging and dangerous conditions. Incidents such as these are a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly outdoor recreation can turn tragic, and our thoughts remain with everyone affected by this loss.

Some gave all. 🇺🇸

This Memorial Day, while the grills are going, the lakes are full, and the long weekend ensues, remember the reason for the day. Freedom has never been free.

At the Albany County Sheriff’s Office, we recognize the courage of the men and women who answered the call to serve and never returned home. Their sacrifice lives on in the communities they protected, the families they loved, and the freedoms we often take for granted.

Today, we wear the badge with gratitude, fly the flag with pride, and remember the fallen with respect. 🇺🇸

🌞 PICNIC IN THE PARK 🌞

Today, members of the Albany County Sheriff’s Office and our law enforcement partners, were honored to take part in the Picnic in the Park tradition with the 3rd graders from Spring Creek Elementary School.

Thank you to Bloedorns for providing lunch for everyone. K9 Goose also made a special appearance, and our deputies had a great time playing tag, taking group photos, and spending the afternoon with the students.
