ENHANCING OUR SERVICES - DRONE PROGRAM

We are continually striving to enhance the services we offer to Lyon County. This includes now implementing a drone program.

With the advancements in capability and affordability of drones, the benefits/value for public safety are many. It can be lifesaving.

Our drone has a regular high resolution camera as well as thermal capabilities. It can also be equipped with a spotlight and loudspeaker.

A key to a successful drone program is having trained pilots available to deploy in a timely manner. With that in mind, three of our deputies have completed initial training, and a fourth will complete it in the future.

This technology has the ability to help save lives. It can be quickly deployed to search an area for someone who has wandered (such as a child or individual with dementia), for officer safety searching for an individual who may be armed, to assist a fire department assessing a fire scene, and mapping crashes or crime scenes. These are just some examples.

We all know that time is of the essence in many of these situations, so having this technology available to respond and deploy quickly can really be the difference between life and death. So, we are thankful to be able to have this tool to serve Lyon County going forward.

Pictured is one of our deputies training with the drone today.
