🚒❤️ The Laredo Fire Department Conducts Wellness Checks During Extreme Heat Index

Yesterday, members of the Laredo Fire Department conducted a wellness check at the Hamilton Senior Apartments, located at 815 Salinas Ave., to ensure residents were safe and doing well as extreme heat continues to affect our city.

Our crews checked on residents, provided safety reminders and emphasized the importance of staying hydrated and taking precautions during these dangerously high temperatures expected to continue through Wednesday.

The Laredo Fire Department will continue monitoring conditions and supporting our community during this period of extreme heat. We encourage everyone to check on family members, friends and neighbors especially older adults and those who may be more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.

🚒 Staying Prepared, Staying Safe 🚒

The Laredo Fire Department recently met with the Laredo Health Department, Doctors Hospital, Laredo Medical Center, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and City Management to discuss preparedness plans for potential health concerns, including Ebola and the New World Screwworm.
These meetings are part of our ongoing effort to make sure our first responders, healthcare providers and partner agencies are ready to work together if needed. Preparation and planning are key to keeping our community safe.

✅ There are currently NO reported cases of Ebola or New World Screwworm in Laredo.

This was simply a proactive planning meeting to ensure that we are prepared and informed should any future concerns arise.

The Laredo Fire Department remains committed to protecting our community through training, teamwork and preparedness.

🔥 EXTREME HEAT ALERT FOR SOUTH TEXAS 🔥

Dangerous heat conditions are expected across South Texas over the next several days.

🌡️ Today will be the most severe day, with afternoon temperatures reaching the upper 90s to low 100s. However, when temperature and humidity are combined, the HEAT INDEX ("feels like" temperature) could approach 120°F in some areas.

⚠️ A heat index of 120°F does not mean the actual air temperature will be 120°F. It means the combination of heat and humidity will make it feel that hot to the human body, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.

📅 Looking Ahead:
Heat index values are expected to remain well above 100°F through Wednesday, resulting in several consecutive days of dangerous heat exposure.

💧 Heat Safety Tips:
• Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
• Limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
• Take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
• Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
• Never leave children, older adults, or pets in vehicles.
• Check on family members, neighbors, and anyone who may be vulnerable to the heat.

🚑 Extended periods of extreme heat can lead to an increase in heat-related emergencies. Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and seek medical attention immediately if symptoms become severe.

🚨PLANE CRASH LOOP 20 CLOSURE 🚨

All northbound and southbound traffic on the Loop is currently closed near the Saunders Street / Clark Boulevard area, with northbound closures beginning at Cuatro Vientos Road and southbound traffic being diverted and closed at Saunders Street.

Please avoid the area and seek alternate routes until further notice. Officers are on scene working the incident, and updates will be provided as they become available. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

The Laredo Fire Department was honored to welcome representatives from Protección Civil Querétaro and our fellow emergency response partners from the municipalities of Landa de Matamoros, Jalpan de Serra, Pinal de Amoles, Arroyo Seco, Querétaro, and Corregidora.

During their visit, our teams had the opportunity to share knowledge, strengthen relationships, and tour our facilities. As part of this ongoing partnership, the Laredo Fire Department donated firefighting gear and equipment to support the vital work being performed in their communities. 🚒

An Intent of Agreement was also signed, establishing a commitment to continued collaboration, training, and mutual support between our departments and our Mexican counterparts. Together, we are building stronger, safer communities on both sides of the border. 🧯

We thank our visitors for making the trip and look forward to many future opportunities to work together.

🚒 Laredo Fire Dept. Weather Advisory 🚒

The Laredo area may experience periods of heavy rainfall through the coming days, with the potential for localized flooding in low-lying and poor-drainage areas. While rainfall will help provide temporary relief from the heat, warmer and more humid conditions could follow later in the week, causing heat index values to rise.

🌧️ What to Expect
• Periods of moderate to heavy rainfall
• Ponding of water on roadways and possible localized flooding
• Reduced visibility during heavier downpours
• Increased heat and humidity after the rain moves out

⚠️ Safety Reminders
• Never drive through flooded roadways. Turn Around, Don't Drown.
• Allow extra travel time during periods of heavy rain.
• Monitor local weather forecasts and alerts.
• Check on elderly relatives, neighbors, and those without reliable air conditioning as temperatures and humidity increase later this week.
• Keep emergency supplies, flashlights, and charged mobile devices readily available.

At this time, there is no need for alarm, but we encourage everyone to stay weather-aware and take common-sense precautions. The Laredo Fire Department will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as needed.

As we move into the summer months, the Laredo Fire Department remains committed to protecting our community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our firefighters, paramedics, inspectors, and support personnel continue to answer the call whenever help is needed, ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents.
With temperatures rising and more families spending time outdoors, now is the perfect time to focus on summer safety:

☀️ Beat the Heat
• Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.

• Avoid prolonged outdoor activity during peak afternoon temperatures.

• Never leave children, elderly individuals, or pets inside parked vehicles, even for a short period.

🔥 Outdoor Fire Safety
• Keep grills at least 10 feet away from homes, fences, and combustible materials.

• Never leave a grill, fire pit, or outdoor flame unattended.

• Properly extinguish charcoal and outdoor fires before leaving the area.

🏊 Water Safety
• Always supervise children around pools, lakes, and other bodies of water.

• Ensure barriers and gates around pools are secure.

• Wear life jackets when participating in water activities.

🚗 Travel Safely
• Buckle up every trip, every time.

• Avoid distracted driving and put your phone away while behind the wheel.

• Be extra cautious around pedestrians, cyclists, and work zones.

Yesterday, the Laredo Fire Department and Laredo College proudly launched the Firefighter Leadership Cohort Program, an investment in the future leaders of our organization.

This program is designed to strengthen leadership skills, foster professional growth, and prepare our firefighters to meet the evolving challenges of the fire service while continuing to provide exceptional service to our community.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Laredo College for partnering with us and providing this outstanding opportunity for education and leadership development. Their commitment to developing public servants will have a lasting impact on our department and the citizens we serve.
