Today, Chair Krystal Oriadha and several of her Council colleagues joined County Executive Aisha Braveboy to announce her appointment of Dr. Shawn Joseph as PGCPS superintendent, following a nationwide search. For the past year, Dr. Joseph served as interim superintendent.

In honor of Jonah West-Ramirez, a 9-year-old who tragically died in a fire last year, Council Member Edward Burroughs III launched a new fire safety program this week, distributing 500 smoke alarms and fire extinguishers to families in District 8.

Earlier this week, the Council enacted legislation proposed by Council Members Adams-Stafford and Adams establishing the Service-Disabled Veteran Owned Business Preference Program. Under the program, county businesses owned by service-disabled veterans will receive an additional 5% preference when bidding on county procurement contracts. The goal is to help veteran business owners overcome barriers to securing contracts with the county.

Aiming to reduce food insecurity in District 5, today, Council Member Shayla Adams-Stafford launched the Fairmount Five Market, a unique partnership with Goodr and the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System, allowing residents to “shop” for free grocery products inside the Fairmount Heights Branch Library.

The Council adopted a balanced $6 billion budget for fiscal year 2027 yesterday. The FY 2027 budget closes a nearly $155 million structural deficit and prioritizes education, public safety, infrastructure, and essential services for all Prince Georgians.

Chair Krystal Oriadha introduced a comprehensive package of legislation yesterday focused on community beautification. The package aims to incentivize faster cleanup of blight and litter, deter future community cleanliness violations, and make it easier for residents to track 311 cleanup requests. The ‘See It, Snap It, Get Paid Act’ will even allow residents to get paid for reporting cleanliness violations!
