Prince George’s County Hackathon: Innovate. Collaborate. Impact.

Calling all innovators, problem-solvers, students, entrepreneurs, community members, and technology enthusiasts!

Prince George’s County Government, in partnership with Capitol Technology University and Amazon Web Services (AWS), invites you to join us for an exciting full-day HACKATHON focused on using technology, creativity, and collaboration to tackle real-world challenges and help build stronger, smarter communities.

THROUGH THEIR EYES: Celebrating OIT’s Summer Youth!

As we close out another incredible summer, we’re proud to shine a spotlight on the talented young people who spent their summer learning, creating, and contributing right here at the Prince George’s County Office of Information Technology (OIT).

Through Their Eyes gives us a glimpse into their OIT experience—from exploring Artificial Intelligence, data analytics, cybersecurity, networking, automation, and emerging technologies to working alongside OIT professionals on meaningful, real-world projects.

But this summer was about more than technology. It was about exposure, mentorship, confidence, professional growth, and helping our youth see what’s possible.

We are incredibly proud of everything our interns accomplished and grateful to the OIT staff and mentors who took the time to teach, encourage, challenge, and pour into them throughout the summer.

To our interns: Thank you for allowing us to experience OIT Through Your Eyes! Keep learning. Keep creating. Keep asking questions. And most importantly—keep dreaming BIG!

From Student Research to Real-World Impact!

OIT had the opportunity to see three outstanding research projects from Bowie State University students, each using data to explore important issues impacting Prince George’s County:

Transportation — Identifying barriers to mobility and recommendations for improving access

Health Insurance — Examining gaps in coverage and opportunities for stronger outreach

Housing Stability — Exploring housing instability, foreclosure, permitting needs, and existing gaps

But what makes this work especially exciting is what comes next!

These findings—and the data behind them—have the potential to become compelling data stories on the County’s Open Data Portal, transforming student research into meaningful resources that can educate our community and help inform decision-making.

This collaboration also opens the door to something even bigger: fully integrating a Bowie State–Prince George’s County hackathon experience into the academic curriculum. Imagine students working with real-world County data and AI to develop innovative solutions to real community challenges—all while gaining valuable hands-on experience.

It creates a targeted audience, a meaningful pathway for continued student engagement, and an exciting opportunity to support OIT's vision for ongoing hackathons and innovation across the County.

There is so much potential when we connect education, technology, data, and community impact. I’m excited to see where this can go!

SYEP SPOTLIGHT: Jaden Devane | Where Documentation Meets Innovation!

What happens when you combine process improvement, knowledge management, and Artificial Intelligence? You get an internship project that can make a real difference!

During his time with OIT’s Summer Youth Enrichment Program (SYEP), Jaden took on the important task of supporting the development and documentation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)for OIT’s Network/Telecom and CNET teams.

Working alongside OIT professionals, Jaden helped organize existing processes, document critical workflows, and transform operational knowled into clear, standardized procedures designed to improve consistency, efficiency, and knowledge sharing across the teams.

But Jaden didn’t stop at documentation!

He took his project one step further by bringing AI into the equation.

Jaden developed an AI-powered chatbot that can query the team’s SOP library, allowing employees to quickly search for and retrieve the procedural information they need — without spending valuable time searching through documents.

Think about that: instead of simply creating a library of SOPs, Jaden explored how AI could make that knowledge more accessible, searchable, and useful. His project helped lay the foundation for a smarter and more user-friendly approach to knowledge management within OIT.

Through this experience, Jaden demonstrated initiative, technical aptitude, problem-solving skills, and an innovative mindset — while working on solutions connected to real operational needs.

And that is what OIT’s SYEP experience is all about! It’s more than an internship. It’s an opportunity for young people to learn from IT professionals, tackle real-world challenges, explore emerging technology, and see their ideas come to life.

Outstanding job, Jaden! You didn’t just document how the work gets done — you explored how technology can help us do it smarter.

SYEP SPOTLIGHT: Pratham Yadav | Building Smarter Solutions with AI!

From an idea to a working demonstration in just six weeks!

OIT’s Summer Youth Enrichment Program (SYEP) participant Pratham Yadav recently had the exciting opportunity to demonstrate the results of his six-week internship project to several senior-level Prince George’s County leaders — showcasing not only what he built, but the incredible potential of our next generation of technology professionals.

During his time with OIT, Pratham worked on two innovative AI-powered solutions: a 311 Chatbot designed to help residents more easily access County information and services, and Georgie, an IT Help Desk Chatbot, created to help employees quickly find answers and navigate common technology support needs.

During his demonstration, Pratham walked County leaders through both solutions, explained their functionality and potential use cases, and showed firsthand how artificial intelligence and conversational technology can be used to improve both resident and employee experiences.

What makes this accomplishment even more impressive is the timeline — six weeks to research, learn, develop, test, refine, and confidently demonstrate his work before County leadership.

This is exactly what OIT’s SYEP experience is designed to foster: giving young people meaningful opportunities to work with emerging technologies, solve real-world challenges, develop professional skills, and gain exposure to leaders who are shaping the future of Prince George’s County.

Outstanding work, Pratham! Your innovation, confidence, and willingness to take on a challenge are a great example of what can happen when young talent is given the opportunity to learn, build, and ELEVATE!

And a special thank you to Dinesh Kumar for providing the leadership, mentorship, and guidance that helped turn this six-week experience into an opportunity for innovation, learning, and professional growth.

SYEP SPOTLIGHT: Nicholas Kelly | Turning Data Into Stories & Ideas Into Innovation!

Today, OIT’s Summer Youth Enrichment Program (SYEP) participant Nicholas Kelly had the opportunity to step into the spotlight and present his internship projects to members of the OIT team for feedback and critique!

Throughout his internship with OIT’s Data Management and Analytics Division, under the leadership and mentorship of LaShonda Henderson, Nicholas has explored the intersection of data, history, research, and emerging technology.

His work included developing a historical timeline highlighting significant people, events, and landmarks throughout Prince George’s County; creating Open Data Stories showcasing African American demographics and historical and contemporary contributions; conducting demographic research; and developing a dashboard to organize and manage AI prompts.

Nicholas also expanded his technology knowledge by researching hackathons and innovation opportunities, identifying potential connections with the University of Maryland, and exploring the fundamentals of chatbot development and conversational AI.

Today’s presentation was about more than showcasing completed projects — it was an opportunity for Nicholas to strengthen his professional skills by presenting his work, explaining his research and ideas, and receiving constructive feedback from OIT professionals.

Experiences like this are what SYEP is all about: providing our young people with opportunities to learn, create, present, receive mentorship, and envision themselves as the next generation of technology professionals and innovators.

Today marks the final day of an incredible 10-week partnership with our talented Bowie State University interns!

Over the past 10 weeks, Naomi Onuosa, Mya Parker, Abdoul Diallo, and Nia Allen have demonstrated professionalism, innovation, and a true passion for technology. Their hard work, dedication, and willingness to learn have made a lasting impact on the Office of Information Technology.

One of their signature accomplishments was developing a Service Desk Chatbot project—an innovative solution that highlighted their creativity, technical expertise, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities. Their work reflects the bright future of the next generation of IT professionals, and we couldn't be more proud.

To Naomi, Mya, Abdoul, and Nia: Thank you for your commitment, your positive attitudes, and the energy you brought to our team every day. It has been an honor to be part of your journey, and we know each of you has an incredibly bright future ahead.

Today, the OIT team attended the Bowie State University Center for Data Analytics AI and Data Science Conference, where students from Prince George’s County showcased innovative, community-focused solutions powered by AI.

Their projects included:
• A climate evaluation tool
• A heart arrhythmia predictor designed to identify potential heart attacks
• A course selection platform that connects academic choices to career outcomes
• A hospital readmission analysis highlighting pneumonia as a condition requiring targeted intervention

These presentations underscored how students at Maryland’s oldest HBCU are leveraging artificial intelligence to address real-world challenges and drive meaningful impact in their communities.
