Tampa General Hospitals K9 Otto with his new handler, Officer Josue Rodriguez. What a great time to go back to food to encourage obedience without conflict, as they learn to trust each other on patrol. This was a great first day. When you create a dog that wants to perform, not just fears the correction, transitions like this are easy!

Creating some positive association to the muzzle using markers and food. Instead of the old strap em up and slap them in the face method. 🤦 Muzzle training is essential in scenario based training. And that good, neutral association starts here! Yes/food strikes again!

Just a quick maintenance track with K9 Logan. 7 years of training tracks isn't enough reps if you want to stay successful. Constant maintenance is essential. "Stay ready and you don't have to get ready."

Working exclusively with K9 Otto and Ofc. Delanoy today. This team has come a long way in the few months they've been together. Otto went from a "leave 'em in the car" overly aggressive reaction to the hospital environment to now calmly patroling the very busy ER, standing posts, and people sniff search work. It has been nothing but hard work in training by this team to achieve these results. In the last video, Otto very proficiently scans the main entrance line crowd, alerting to the assault rifle magazine and ammunition concealed in my bag. TGH is innovating with this program and leading the industry in hospital security.

Picture yourself as an athlete, only you never know when your game is. How ready would you stay for the game? Adopt this mentality in K9, and success will follow. Maintain a constant state of readiness in your partner and yourself.

🐾 Meet our Muddy Paws Fur-Family 🐾

Mars “The Old Man” was Tony’s dual purpose working dog from 2012-2019. He now spends his days enjoying brunches with mom and dad and (reluctantly) being the new puppy’s jungle gym and pillow.

Logan is Tony’s current dual purpose working dog since 2019. He is the happiest, craziest, most energetic dog, and he loves going to work and fetching planks (yes… planks of wood).

Gus Gus is the newest member of our family, a lab/plot hound/who knows little mutt we rescued in May. He is so smart and sweet and loves running around with Logan and snuggling with everyone, but especially Mars (when Mars lets him 🤣).
