Larkspur Fire Protection District

Larkspur Fire Protection District Larkspur Fire Protection District provides fire protection & emergency medical / ambulance services Station 164 is located in Bald Mountain on Furrow Road.

The Larkspur Fire Protection District provides fire protection and emergency medical / ambulance services to 109 square miles in Southern Douglas County. The district utilizes a combination of volunteer and paid staff to respond to emergencies. Currently the district operates three fire stations and a total of 18 vehicles. Station 161 is the main station and is located in the town of Larkspur. Thi

s station is staffed 24 hours a day and is also where our administrative offices are located. Station 162 is located in Perry Park at the stable complex and is also staffed 24 hours per day. Station 164 are operated by our volunteer staff. Response times to emergency calls within the district are swift and compare to most metropolitan areas. Response times may vary for many reasons, such as, distance to call, access to call location, weather, and resource availability. The district has mutual aid agreements with all of the surrounding fire departments to ensure that adequate resources are available during extreme emergency situations.

A whole lot of training and learning has been taking place here over the past week and continued this weekend. 13 fire departments, including three students form Larkspur, were represented in a five-day Fire Officer 1 class. The class is meant for firefighters who desire to advance to become fire officers. It covers topics including leadership and supervision, human resource management, and a host of other knowledge needed to become a fire service officer. The class was taught by instructors from Larkspur, Castle, Franktown, Monument, Windsor-Severance, Bennett, Security, Sable, Fort Lupton, and Durango Fire. Thank you all for making this class a success.

Other students hit the books yesterday for an Incident Command System class - a class that continues today. The ICS system is used by responders all over the country for large wildfires and other emergencies. It ensures that everyone uses the same terminology and understands the roles that each person plays in an Incident Management Team (IMT).

And of course it’s not all class room learning. The current fire academy class traveled to Bennett Fire last weekend for hands on training in “speciality fires” — car fires, natural gas, even dumpster fires. Our 5-year strategic plan envisions our own training facility here in Larkspur so, perhaps, in the future we won’t need to travel for these required training sessions. The Pikes and Isabel National Forrest has ended fire restrictions, for now. Moisture doesn’t mean you shouldn’t mitigate for wildfire- get started now while it’s still cool.

Due to recent moisture, conditions have improved enough to lift the stage 1 fire restrictions order, effective May 28, 2026, at 12:01 a.m.

For more information, please read the press release at https://www.fs.usda.gov/r02/psicc/newsroom/releases/psicc-lifts-stage-1-fire-restrictions

Ever heard of the Bald Mountain Fire Department? If not, you’re not alone but it’s been part of the Larkspur Fire Protection District for about 35 years. This and other historical tidbits have recently been added to the Larkspur Historical Society’s web page (larkspurhistoricalsociety.org). Thanks to retired volunteer and Board President Roger Greer there’s a bunch of new (old) info in there including an 1898 map showing some big fires that burned near here way back in the day.

BTW, we still use the old Bald Mountain Station on Furrow Road though it is not staffed. Due to projected growth in the southern part of the fire district our strategic plan envisions a staffed station in that area but probably not for many years yet. Happy Memorial Day weekend! Just a reminder that fire restrictions are still in place in Douglas County. But as our Fire Chief Tim McCawley told Channel 7 yesterday, that does not mean you still can't enjoy yourselves. Stage 1 restrictions prohibit open burning, fireworks and model rockets but some fires are still allowed. Details at: https://dcsheriff.net/sheriffs-office/divisions/emergency-management/fire-restrictions/

Douglas County is under a Stage 1 fire ban this Memorial Day weekend. No open burning or fireworks, but propane fire pits are still allowed.

🌧 More wet weather ahead and that means some slippery roads so please … slow down. ⚠️ In these pictures from a recent highway crash you’ll see the engine in a “blocking” position. That means it’s angled to help protect responders working on the crash in case someone misses all the flashing lights (it happens). Colorado State Patrol Troopers, tow truck drivers and our crews all want to go home at the end of a shift so please -- ease off the accelerator and keep your eyes on the road when you come across the scene of a crash. Thank you.

You may have seen some smoke today along Fox Farm Road. The crews responded to a tree on fire from a lightning strike. The fire was contained to the tree of origin and the crews were on scene for about 2 1/2 hours falling the large tree and making sure all the hot spots were extinguished. While the weather has been wet the last few days there are still many opportunities for fires to start. We are being ever vigilant to ensure the safety of the community.

Today is a great example of our new staffing plan that made it possible for our crew to work this fire while still having a fully staffed station available to protect the District.
