Town of Wi******er Fire Department receives grant from We Energy Foundation

A big thanks to the We Energies Foundation for a $2000.00 grant to the Town of Wi******er Fire Department. With this grant, our department will be buying a set of bunker gear for one of our firefighters. Bunker gear (also called turnout gear) is the primary protective clothing for structural firefighting. It consists of a coat and pants with three distinct layers: outer shell (abrasion and flame resistance), moisture barrier (waterproof and breathable), and thermal liner (insulation from heat). Together these layers protect against burns, cuts, chemicals, and bloodborne pathogens while allowing you to work effectively. This gear is worn as our standard equipment on all calls except for wildland fires.

Chief Kempen explains “NFPA standards require this gear to be replaced every 10 years. At the cost of one set of bunker gear x 25 members, this is a major expense for our department to keep updated. Our department has developed a cycle to replace 3 sets of bunker gear each year to help spread out the costs and not have it all replaced in one year. This timing has worked out tremendously with our staff growth. Receiving this grant to get one set of bunker gear will help with our budget constraints and provide PPE for one firefighter.”

“We rely heavily on organizations and community members who financially support our department. Being selected for this grant provides our department with much needed budget relief and provides our fire fighters with critical Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).”

If you hear a rumble in town today at around noon, The Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association will be coming into town on CTY Rd M from Appleton and coming right down II into Zittau. Our department is honored to be traffic control for this event in the town limits. They are expecting in excess of 100 bikes. I am sure they would appreciate any viewers along the route.

We have some exciting news to share! The Town of Wi******er Fire & EMS has been selected as one of 150 volunteer fire departments nationwide to receive a $10,000 grant through the State Farm® Good Neighbor Firefighter Safety Program in collaboration with the National Volunteer Fire Council.

With this grant, the Town of Wi******er Fire & EMS will be purchasing Turnout gear for firefighters, Thermal Imaging Camera and charger for truck, Milwaukee Scene Lighting Tower, and M-18 batteries and chargers for upgraded fire scene tools.

“We are still a relatively young fire department, and we have many needs,” explains Chief Tim Kempen. “We have a modest budget that we work within, and we take seriously being good stewards of the resources we are provided. We also rely heavily on organizations and community members who financially support our department and help us purchase equipment that falls outside of our regular operating budget.

“Being selected for grants like the State Farm Good Neighbor Firefighter Safety Program provides much-needed budget relief and helps us put important equipment in the hands of our firefighters and first responders. Having the right equipment and tools is essential to keeping them safe and effective on incident scenes."

A big thank you to DripDrop and National Volunteer Fire Council for including us in the 2026 DripDrop Hydration Giveback Campaign! This donation of DripDrop electrolyte drink mix will help keep our firefighters and EMS providers hydrated during training, emergency responses, extreme heat, and long incidents.
