Last night, we said goodbye to our former Tanker 403 as it began the next chapter of its story with a new owner.

Tanker 403 started life as a road tractor before being transformed into a fire apparatus through the dedication, ingenuity, and hard work of Richland Township firefighters. After serving as a farm semi, the frame was stretched and the body was built locally, creating a tanker that would faithfully serve our community for more than three decades.

The truck also carried a unique piece of local history. Its tank was the first stainless-steel fire tank manufactured by Stafco in Columbia City, Indiana. Tanker 403 responded to countless emergencies throughout Richland Township and surrounding communities, providing the dependable water supply that is critical in our rural response district.

More than just a fire truck, Tanker 403 represented the resourcefulness and commitment of the members who built and maintained it throughout its service life. The dedication of those firefighters helped shape the department we are today.

We thank all past and present members who played a role in Tanker 403’s history and service. While it is never easy to see a longtime apparatus leave the fleet, we are excited for the future. Tanker 403 has been replaced by a new-to-us pumper-tanker that will continue serving our community for years to come, and we look forward to sharing more information about it in the near future.

Thank you, Tanker 403, for 3 decades of faithful service.

May is coming to an end, but our commitment to mental health doesn’t stop here.

Behind every call, shift, and "I’m okay" is a weight most people never see. We are facing a silent mental health epidemic that doesn't just affect emergency personnel—it affects us all. These challenges do not discriminate; they touch our families and neighbors just as deeply as those in uniform.

You do not have to carry the weight alone. Support is always available, and checking in on one another matters every single day of the year. If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out.

Tonight, we would like to congratulate Cadet Gavin Stidams and Probationary EMT Hailey Coleman on graduating from the 10th Columbia City High School Fire & EMT Academy.

Cadet Stidams successfully completed the Firefighter I, Hazardous Materials Awareness, and Hazardous Materials Operations portions of the academy and will continue into Firefighter II and EMT classes next school year.

EMT Coleman completed the EMT Academy, passed her Indiana state skills testing, and will now move on to take her National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) examination.

The Columbia City High School Fire & EMT Academy holds a special place within Richland Township Fire Department history. Chief Tanner Moore is a graduate of the very first Columbia City High School Fire & EMT Academy in 2016, while Captain Connor Green graduated from the 2024 academy. In addition to Chief Moore, Captain Green, Cadet Stidams, and EMT Coleman, three other members are also graduates of the Columbia City High School Fire & EMT Academy and continue serving their community through our department.

We would also like to congratulate all of this year’s graduates on their accomplishments and dedication to the fire and EMS service.

Lastly, thank you to Captain Kyle Francis of Columbia City Fire Department for starting this program 10 years ago, and to Chief Rumsyre, Chief Lewis, and Paramedic Blake Forrester for continuing to grow and support this outstanding program for future first responders.

Last night six of our members spent the evening sharpening their extrication skills through hands-on training. Crews worked through multiple scenarios including a roof roll, full roof removal, door removal, trunk access, and stabilization of a vehicle on its side utilizing our rescue struts. Members also had the opportunity to continue training with our new battery-powered TNT Rescue extrication tools provided through the Firehouse Subs Foundation Grant. Members built familiarity and confidence with equipment that will help us provide faster and more effective rescue operations for our community.

Training like this allows our members to improve efficiency, strengthen teamwork, and prepare for the challenges we may face on the roadway.

As we were wrapping up and cleaning equipment, we were dispatched to a medical call. Shortly after clearing that incident, we were then dispatched to a motor vehicle crash.

Training never stops, and neither does our commitment to serving our community. Whether it’s training on skills, responding to emergencies, or preparing for the unexpected, our members remain ready to answer the call whenever needed.
