Update: the largest fire is now the Morrill Fire in Nebraska, which has burned an estimated 330,000 acres

The smoke visible is attributed to multiple fires currently burning in Nebraska, with the largest being the Road 203 fire, which spans over 35,000 acres.

For Immediate Release:

At approximately 2:41 p.m. today, fire crews responded to a report of a controlled burn that had escaped containment near Highway 101 and County Road DD.5.

Upon arrival, fire crews quickly assessed the situation and initiated an aggressive initial attack to prevent the fire from spreading further. Crews utilized controlled burn operations and suppression tactics to safely slow the fire’s progression and establish containment lines.

Thanks to the rapid response and coordinated efforts of fire personnel and county workers, the fire was quickly contained. Crews remained on scene to monitor the area and ensure all remaining hot spots were fully extinguished.

Residents are reminded to use caution when conducting controlled burns and to monitor weather and wind conditions closely.

We wanted to say thank you to The Las Animas Fire Department, Bent County Road and Bridge, Bent County Sheriff’s Office, and DFPC for their assistance today.

Please contact the Bent County Sheriff’s ofifce dispatch [719-456-1363] before you light and let them know your plans. The Bent County Sheriffs office and Las Animas fire Department do not charge for a burn permit. All it takes is a phone call.

Last year, **unreported controlled burns tied up 30% of our wildfire response resources** statewide — pulling crews away from real emergencies and costing taxpayers **$2.1 million** in unnecessary deployments. *(Source: [State Fire Marshal’s 2024 Report])*
