155 Traffic Citations Issued in Joint Operation

Las Cruces and New Mexico State University police teamed together Wednesday for a traffic safety operation that recorded 155 citations during a three-hour period.

Wednesday, Aug. 19, was the first day of classes for the 2026 fall semester at New Mexico State University. Officers from both police departments conducted the traffic enforcement operation along University Avenue.

“This is another great example of collaboration between departments in safeguarding our campus community,” said Justin Dunivan, Chief of the New Mexico State University Police Department. “Our primary goal is maintaining a safe campus, and that includes working with our public safety partners in ensuring all aspects of traffic and pedestrian safety.”

“We’re proud of the partnership we have with Chief Dunivan and the New Mexico State University Police Department,” said Jeremy Story, Chief of the Las Cruces Police Department. “NMSU is a big part of our community, and we want its students, faculty and staff to have a safe and successful semester. Working together with Chief Dunivan and his team is a great way for us to help make that happen.”

Traffic citations issued during the three-hour operation included:

• 37 – No Registration
• 32 – No Insurance
• 24 – Speeding
• 22 – Cell Phone Violation
• 14 – Equipment Violation
• 9 – Red Light
• 5 – No Driver’s License
• 4 – Crosswalk Violation
• 3 – No Seatbelt
• 2 – Parking Violation

Additional citations were issued for failure to yield, driving with no license plate and littering. New Mexico State Police also assisted with the operation.

Area law enforcement agencies will plan additional traffic safety operations in the near future.

New Mexico State University Police Chief Justin Dunivan will host a community meeting about safety on Monday, Aug. 24 at 12:30 p.m. in the Corbett Center Senate Gallery, Room 304.

“When we gather together, it breaks down barriers and builds the trust necessary for real communication,” said NMSU Police Chief Justin Dunivan. “It gives us a chance to share the actual data, dispel rumors and provide actionable tips that can keep people on campus and our greater community from becoming a victim of crime.”

Detective Allen served the Anthony community with dedication, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others. His service to our community and the lasting impact he made on his fellow officers, City staff, and those he encountered will never be forgotten.

4th of July Concert Reminder – Clear Bag Policy in Effect ‼️

As you get ready to celebrate Independence Day at the 4th of July Concert at NMSU Pat & Lou Sisbarro Community Park, please remember that a Clear Bag Policy will be strictly enforced to ensure a safe and enjoyable event for everyone.

🚨 CLEAR BAG POLICY 🚨
Approved bags:
• Clear totes up to 12″ x 6″ x 12″
• One‑gallon clear plastic storage bags
• Small non‑clear clutches up to 4.5″ x 6.5″
All bags will be checked at the entrance.

🚫 Items Not Allowed:
• No gas or charcoal grilling allowed in parking areas
• No personal use fireworks are allowed on NMSU campus
• No glass bottles or containers
• No RVs or overnight parking
• No outside alcohol (Alcohol consumption is only allowed inside the designated area inside Sisbarro Park)
• No weapons or knives
• No littering - please be courteous and dispose of all trash items in bins
• No signage or banners with support sticks or metal

Anyone entering Sisbarro Park for reasons outside the intended purpose of the event may be asked to leave by CLC/NMSU authorities. The park is dedicated to attending and enjoying the scheduled activities, and disruptive behavior or interference with the event will not be permitted.
