The tariff war just knocked on my studio door.

As a packaging designer fluent in both FDA and CFIA packaging/labeling requirements, I’ve built relationships on both sides of the border — US brands wanting into Canadian retail, Canadian clients trusting Luna Design to get their products shelf-ready and compliant. That cross-border work? It’s now sitting in a very uncomfortable grey zone.

Tariffs don’t just hit manufacturers. They ripple. When a client freezes a product launch because landed costs just blew up their margin, I feel it. When a Canadian retailer pulls back on US-made goods, the brands I helped package lose their footing — and so do I.

This isn’t abstract trade policy. This is kitchen table economics ramming itself down the throats of real people — business owners, designers, distributors, grocery workers — who did nothing wrong except try to build something honest across a border that used to feel like a handshake.

Ordinary Americans are already carrying inflation. Already absorbing the morale hits. Already stretching. And now this.

I built cross-border expertise because I believed in serving markets, not fighting them. I designed packaging that could live on shelves in both countries because trade worked. Because collaboration worked.

Et tu, America?

We didn’t ask for this trade war. We’re just the ones paying for it.

At the recent Candidates Forum Series 3 hosted by the FilAm Dems, the room was reminded why community forums matter: they bring voters closer to the people asking to lead.

It was a meaningful opportunity to meet and hear from Zach Conine, Alexis Hill, and Tya Mathis as they shared their experiences, priorities, and action plans if elected. Each conversation gave attendees a clearer view of the issues at stake, the leadership needed, and the importance of showing up informed, engaged, and ready to vote.

Democracy becomes stronger when communities listen, ask questions, and take part. This forum was one more step toward building that kind of civic participation.
