Do your weekend plans have a missing piece? 🧩

Join us for a special program this Saturday morning at Desert National Wildlife Refuge. Come build and learn with us from 10 am - 12 pm at the Corn Creek Visitor Center.

Did you know that Mojave desert tortoises can live for approximately 50 to 80 years and spend as much as nine months each year inside their burrows? Learn more about tortoises and other iconic desert wildlife this Saturday, June 6, from 10 am - 12 pm. LUGVegas (LEGO® Users Group of Southern Nevada), Tule Springs Fossil Beds, and the refuge staff host a free drop-in program where all ages can learn through hands-on activities and custom builds inspired by Mojave desert wildlife.

Did you know that bats roost in fossil-rich badlands? 🦇 We didn’t either!

Tule Springs Fossil Beds was featured in the 2025 NPS Science and Stewardship Highlights for our bat survey work. Heat was a key method to detect these elusive, nocturnal cuties.
Thermal cameras made it possible to monitor bats in the darkness and trace their disappearance into narrow crevices carved into ancient Ice Age sediments. It turns out that bat homes were hidden within Pleistocene-age badlands!

The survey confirmed the park’s first-ever documented discovery of canyon bats roosting within the badlands. This new discovery reveals a new vital bat roosting habitat as urban development expands across the Las Vegas Valley. Beyond the excitement of the discovery, the findings open a door for future bat monitoring and long-term stewardship to help ensure that both the landscape and bats are protected.
