Adventure is out there! 🐏🏜️

Our outdoor observation this week is a throwback video provided by our Education Outreach Presenter Emma. While on a trip to Valley of Fire, she spotted this herd of big horn sheep with the little ones on a rock climbing adventure!

Big horn sheep are amazing mountain climbers with cloven hooves, using the hard outter rim to cut into rock and a soft inner hoof pad to better grip the rock edges. We cannot wait for our Summer months to cool so we can get back out there to enjoy sights like these!

Our Outdoor Observations 🔎

This outdoor observation is provided by our Outreach Strategist Iris.

"While out on a walk down the Union Pacific Railway Trail, I was startled by what I thought was a snake! Turns out, what I discovered was a community of painted rocks winding along the trail path. It was a nice surprise to see the community contribute something bright and colorful to the outdoors. I was thinking of adding one on my next visit!"

Thank you to our wonderful partners & volunteers for making this summer a SEEDccess! With their help, we were able to clean 90 grams of seeds from 7 different types of native Mojave plants. ANDDD, we still have one more seed workshop to go! Do you think we will surpass 100 grams of seeds?

Summer is coming to a close, but soon we will be posting outdoor Fall volunteer events on our website at volunteer.getoutdoorsnevada.org. Check back in with us soon, and we hope to see you at one of our events!

‼️Trigger Warning: Arachnophobia 🕷️🕸️‼️

This week's Outdoor Observation comes from our Native Habitat Specialsit Diana:

"As we were driving back to the office, the plants Constance and I got from the nursery were blowing in the wind, so we decided to let them ride up front with us in the cab. As I set the 4 o' Clock [plant] pot down on the seat, I saw a black widow and said, 'nope! nope! nope!' Constance was my hero as she got it to climb onto a stick and then placed it far from us and the truck. 😇"

We're happy our plants are seen as a welcoming home for wildlife. But this time, we would appreciate it if it didn't move in with us. 😆

Sliding into your DM's like...🐍

This week's outdoor observation is provided by our Education Outreach Presenter Emma.
While out on a naturalist hike on the Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail, she spotted this California king snake! Though it has "California" in its name, this is a nonvenemous snake endemic to the western United States.

A Quail's Call (SOUND ON 🔊)

This week's outdoor observation is courtesy of our Volunteer Coordinator Constance!

"One of these past windy May days, I ventured out to Laughlin, Nevada to visit Big Bend of the Colorado State Recreation Area. This area features unique, natural sand dunes, shoreline along the clear Colorado river, and an abundance of critters that even dispersed themselves beyond the recreation area (hence the picture). It became too windy to walk in the park, so my husband and I decided to drive around town next to the site. I suddenly spotted this male gambel's quail standing fiercely against the wind. I slammed on my breaks and backed up my car in a deserted parking lot to watch as he called to the world. I laughed at how he still persisted despite obviously being ruffled up by the 20+ mile an hour wind. A great memory!"
