LVMPD Human Trafficking Task Force

LVMPD Human Trafficking Task Force The Mission of the Southern Nevada Human Trafficking Task Force is to ensure the protection of victims, prosecution of offenders and prevention of all forms of human trafficking through effective coordinated partnerships.

Human Trafficking involves the use of force, fraud or coercion to exploit victims for either a commercial sex or labor purposes. The Vice and Sex Trafficking Investigations Section is responsible for investigating Human Trafficking cases involving commercial sex, arresting traffickers, protecting victims, and assisting them in the recovery process. The Vice and Sex Trafficking Investigations Section is a key member of the Southern Nevada Human Trafficking Task Force, partnering with law enforcement agencies and non-governmental partners to combat Human Trafficking. The SNHTTF also provides community outreach, awareness and education programs. The Las Vegas Vice and Sex Trafficking Investigations Section also partners with the Federal Bureau of Investigation as part of the Innocence Lost National Initiative. This Initiative is a nationwide effort, involving nearly 70 other cities, to address the growing problem of domestic sex trafficking of children in the United States. The Southern Nevada Human Trafficking Task Force partners with local, state and federal agencies, local non-profits, faith based organizations, businesses and community members to address all forms of human trafficking. To report in progress activities involving prostitution and potential victims of human trafficking, call the LVMPD non-emergency line at 702-828-3111. Callers can also refer information to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline at 888-373-7888. If you see something, say something.

Remember, recruitment doesn’t happen in parking lots...it can start at home! Pay attention! #peoplearenotproperty

Cell phones, iPads, laptops, and even gaming systems are keeping children busy at home during stay-at-home orders. Yet, all of these....

On International Women’s Day in 1998, President Clinton issued an executive order on Steps to Combat Violence Against Women and Trafficking in Women and Girls, which directed the U.S. government to increase efforts domestically and partner with other countries to protect women and girls from trafficking. This was a prelude to the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) of 2000 which officially addressed human trafficking as a federal crime.

While strides are made everyday, nearly 65% of the 10,949 cases of human trafficking reported to the U.S. National Human Trafficking Hotline in 2018 involved one or more female victims.

Collectively, let's work towards fighting the inequalities women face and challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women's achievements because an equal world is an enabled world.

“Most sex trafficking happens to a relatively small group of high-risk young people. We could do a lot more to prevent trafficking by addressing those vulnerabilities — like family abuse, neglect or foster care placement — directly. Kids are not being smuggled through airports and no one is trying to kidnap you at the grocery store." h/t Together for Girls

According to the Polaris Typology of Modern Slavery Report, domestic or homecare workers often live within their employers’ households and provide services such as cooking, cleaning, and caretaking for children and the elderly or infirm. Labor trafficking for domestic work may also occur within the cycle of intimate partner violence or forced marriage situations as a means of maintaining or exerting power and control. The fact that victims of trafficking, even those who are underage, are still more likely to be criminalized than their abusers is just one reason why it is so essential for us to shift more focus onto the demand for commercial sex.

During Human Trafficking Awareness Month, we’re giving a voice to survivors and those working on the front lines of trafficking. While we’re proud of the results of our tools to identify victims faster, we know that the issue doesn’t end there. The following post was written by Rebecca Bender, co-founder and CEO of the Rebecca Bender Initiative. She is an award-winning, internationally recognized speaker, author and Survivor Leader in the movement to eradicate modern day slavery.
Usually when I tell people I’m a survivor of human trafficking, they say “Oh, like the movie Taken?”
I think, well, kind of. Except I wasn’t pulled out by one leg while gripping at the carpet. My dad didn’t have a special set of skills to come find me. I definitely was not sold for a million dollars on a yacht. So no, not really like Taken at all.
But it’s interesting because we all do that — survivors included. We envision human trafficking in this little box, because of that one movie we saw that one time. As survivors, we grew up in the same culture as all of you, so we envision it the same way. What happens in Nigeria looks very different than it does in Cambodia, than it does in New York City, than it does in Atlanta.

“A convicted sex trafficker always picked individuals that were vulnerable or at a time in their life where they were looking for an out. Or exploited the fact that somebody wants to become famous and he could promise them that fame. He could promise them a new life. If somebody wanted a relationship or just to feel loved, he’d promise that. So, he really focused on whatever vulnerability that specific victim had.” – Natalie D’Amico, a detective with the Redmond Police Department in Washington.
