Alexander Marks, Deputy Executive Director of the Nevada State Education Association, said Nevada charter advocates have emphasized their public school status for years when seeking funding. He added it would be a remarkable reversal for charter schools to claim private status now.

“They're public when it benefits them, they're something else when it benefits them, and you can't be public when it's time to collect taxpayer funding and private when it's time to avoid public accountability,” Marks asserted.

Public education advocates are urging states such as Nevada to change their charter school laws ahead of an expected Supreme Court case which could legalize publicly funded religious charter schools.The

On June 19, 1865, more than 250,000 enslaved people in Texas learned they were free, months after the Civil War had ended and more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Since then, Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, Emancipation Day, and Jubilee Day, has been celebrated as a commemoration of freedom and the end of slavery in the United States.

Today, we honor the past, celebrate freedom, and embrace unity as we continue striving toward a more just and equitable future for all.

This morning, NSEA spoke at the Interim Standing Committee on Education. We discussed our four Bill Draft Request (BDR) recommendations for the Committee's consideration.

1) Paid Student Teaching to reduce financial barriers for aspiring educators and strengthen Nevada's educator pipeline.
2) Self-Contained Special Education Staffing and Safety establishes minimum staffing standards and workforce supports for classrooms serving students with the most intensive needs.
3) Student Assault Injury and Property Damage Protection, to ensure educators and education support professionals do not suffer financial hardship because they were injured while serving Nevada students.
4) Nevada Special Education Educator Onboarding and Support, providing structured onboarding, mentorship, and professional learning opportunities for special education teachers and paraprofessionals.

Today, NSEA President Dawn Etcheverry joined education leaders from across Nevada for a panel discussion on leveraging labor relations, highlighting the critical role unions play in building collaborative workplaces, supporting educators, and improving outcomes for students.

NSEA is proud to help lead conversations that strengthen partnerships, elevate educator voices, foster productive labor-management relationships, and shape the future of public education in Nevada.

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our friend, colleague, union brother, and lifelong advocate for public education, Steve Horner.

Steve dedicated his life to public education, union solidarity, and the belief that working people are strongest when we stand together. He was a tireless advocate for educators, retirees, students, and every member of the NSEA family. His love for this union was unmistakable. Steve did not just believe in the power of unions, he believed deeply in his union, the Nevada State Education Association, and he carried that pride everywhere he went.

Even in recent years, Steve continued showing up for members, mentoring new leaders, canvassing for candidates, attending events, encouraging activists, and reminding all of us why our work matters. His kindness, humor, wisdom, and unwavering commitment touched generations of educators and activists across Nevada and beyond.

Steve leaves behind a legacy of courage, compassion, and service that will continue to inspire us. We are better because of him.

On behalf of the entire NSEA family, we send our love and deepest condolences to Steve’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Steve may no longer be with us, but his solidarity is forever. Rest in Power.

Yes, the was defeated once again, but the broader labor movement did not lose. The major labor coalitions in Nevada, including Culinary, NSEA, and AFSCME, successfully protected key incumbents like Edgar Flores and Jovan Jackson.

Smaller trades supporting the Hollywood Handout had a *very* bad night, but it’s important to remember that's not every labor union. The debate over film tax credits often centers on construction jobs, as if those jobs are uniquely deserving of public support. Construction jobs matter, and we need skilled tradespeople building schools, hospitals, and infrastructure. But those jobs are not more important than public-sector jobs and the vital services they provide.

Both matter, but neither should be treated as more worthy than the other.

This morning, President Etcheverry spoke at the Policy Landscape panel during the Nevada Association of School Superintendents meeting:

"The thing we need to watch is funding. Funding leads to class size reduction, safety, social & emotional learning, and support for students. It’s all going to have to come through a funding source that is sustainable."
