The Las Vegas Fire Department is currently conducting active fire operations at a structure fire in the 1500 block of South Gonzales Street.

Please avoid the area and allow emergency crews the space needed to safely conduct operations.

Traffic control measures are in place, and motorists should expect delays. Please use alternate routes whenever possible and follow the directions of emergency personnel.

Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.

Additional work is underway at the Abe Montoya Recreation Center in preparation for the September racquetball tournament. Crews are repainting the passageway floors near the racquetball courts, which also serve as the main access to the basketball courts.

As a result, both the racquetball and basketball courts will be closed today while the work is completed and the floors are allowed to dry. Both courts are expected to reopen Thursday morning, August 27.

We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding. For questions, please call the Abe Montoya Recreation Center at 505-426-1739.

🐻 Stay Wildlife Aware, Las Vegas!

The City of Las Vegas is reminding residents to stay alert following an increase in bear, mountain lion and other wildlife sightings throughout the city, including residential neighborhoods and city streets.

Dry and drought conditions may cause wildlife to travel farther in search of food and water, so residents are encouraged to take a few simple precautions:

β€’ Secure trash and compost
β€’ Bring pet food and water indoors
β€’ Keep pets indoors when possible
β€’ Remove bird feeders when large wildlife are active nearby
β€’ Clean outdoor grills
β€’ Pick up fallen fruit
β€’ Supervise children and pets outdoors
β€’ Never feed, approach or attempt to capture wildlife

If you encounter a bear, mountain lion or other large animal, keep a safe distance and give it room to leave.

🚨 If the animal poses an immediate threat to people or public safety, call 911.

πŸ“ž For non-emergency wildlife concerns within the city, call Las Vegas Police Department Dispatch at 505-425-7504, Option 1.

πŸ“ž For wildlife assistance, call the New Mexico Department of Wildlife at 1-888-248-6866 during regular business hours. After hours, call New Mexico State Police Dispatch at 505-841-9256.

Stay Alert. Stay Safe. Stay Wildlife Aware.

The Las Vegas Fire Department is also assisting with the evaluation to help ensure any identified safety concerns are appropriately addressed.

The health and safety of our patrons and employees remain a priority. We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding. Updates will be shared as they become available.

08/24/2026

The City of Las Vegas Utilities Department will conduct citywide fire hydrant flushing from Tuesday, August 25 through Friday, August 28, 2026.

Crews will be flushing fire hydrants at various locations throughout the City as part of efforts to address recent taste and odor concerns and improve water quality throughout the distribution system.

During flushing operations, residents may experience temporary low water pressure and/or discolored water. These conditions may occur as water flow through the system disturbs naturally occurring sediment within the lines.

If you experience discolored water, please run cold water from your faucet for approximately 10 to 15 minutes, or until the water runs clear.

Flushing will take place throughout the City during the week, and residents may notice temporary changes in water pressure or appearance as crews move from one area to another.

The City of Las Vegas appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation as Utilities crews complete this important work. The health and safety of our community remain a top priority.

For additional information, please contact the City of Las Vegas Utilities Division at (505) 454-3832 and ask for Travis Martinez.
