UMC is thrilled to spotlight Mary Martinat, Burn Program Manager, for today’s #MedicalMonday. Mary plays a valuable role in ensuring patients receive the highest level of care at the UMC Lions Burn Care Center, Nevada's only verified burn center.

“After 37 years in nursing, I still love being a nurse,” Martinat said. “In my role as Burn Program Manager, I ensure that burn-injured patients receive the best care possible. In my current position at UMC, I have the pleasure of working with the public as well as health professionals to promote burn care as well as burn prevention. Each day brings new challenges, providing me the opportunity to give back to my community through education and injury prevention.”

This #MedicalMonday, we’re spotlighting Dr. Syed Saquib, Medical Director of the UMC Lions Burn Care Center, Nevada’s first and only verified burn center. Driven by his desire to help people, Dr. Saquib chose to pursue a career in trauma and burn surgery, two particularly demanding specialties. While he often sees patients at the most vulnerable times of their lives, he feels grateful for the opportunity to provide life-saving care and valuable support to people in need of his surgical skills.

Also serving as Trauma Surgeon at Nevada’s only Level I Trauma Center, Dr. Saquib spent his entire career preparing for his response to the tragedy that unfolded on October 1, 2017. As the Trauma Surgeon on duty the night of the Route 91 Harvest festival shooting, Dr. Saquib worked tirelessly to save lives alongside his world-class colleagues, delivering the best possible outcomes for patients during our community’s darkest hour.

He continues to take pride in the community’s extraordinary response to the tragic shooting, including the work of UMC, other hospitals, first responders and community members. “We met the worst of humanity with the best of humanity,” he said.

We are taking you back one year ago to the 50th Anniversary of the UMC Lions Burn Care Center. This large-scale reunion event provided a valuable opportunity to celebrate the lives saved by the world-class physicians and nurses at Nevada’s first and only burn care center. Established in 1968, the UMC Lions Burn Care Center is one of only a handful of hospitals in the nation to be verified as a Burn Center by the American Burn Association and the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons. #TBT #LionsBurnCareCenter #UMCSN

UMC Honored with the Cashman Good Government Award

“UMC’s Senior Leadership Team has been awarded the 2016 Cashman Good Government Award, presented by the Nevada Taxpayers Association. The award recognizes superior stewardship of taxpayer dollars by government employees and agencies.

While consistently providing the highest level of care, UMC famously depended on taxpayer dollars to support its indigent care mission, calling for close to $90 million a year during its peak. In 2014, a new leadership team, led by CEO Mason VanHouweling, set out to restructure UMC operations. In just two years, the operation went from a deficit of nearly $100 million to a profitable income of $42 million, enabling it to reinvest in capital infrastructure.” ~ Nevada Taxpayers Association

USAF Colonel Guillermo Tellez, Commander of the 99th Medical Group and Mike O'Callaghan Federal Hospital - Nellis AFB, presented Major (Dr.) Vilas Saldanha with the Meritorious Service Medal at UMC’s Trauma Center.
Dr. Saldanha is part of the Air Force’s Sustained Medical and Readiness Training, or SMART, program, which has allowed Air Force physicians, nurses and technicians stationed at Nellis AFB, and now from across the Air Force, to temporarily work and train at UMC ensuring they stay current and maintain the high level of treatment they attained while deployed.
They are able to maintain their edge because they are treating injuries at UMC’s Level I Trauma Center where they encounter injuries similar to those found on the battlefield, like knife and gunshot wounds. This helps ensure future wounded service members come home alive.

Colonel Tellez also presented certificates of Appreciation to UMC’s Dr. Michael Monroe and Dr. Gerald Sylvain for their efforts and dedication in supporting the SMART program.

It’s Burn Awareness Week!

-Did you know that EVERY MINUTE someone in the United States gets a burn injury severe enough to require treatment?

-Did you also know that 62% of scald burns happen to children less than 5 years old?

-Prevent scalds by keeping children 3 feet away from the stove, using back burners, and turning pot handles inward

-Set your water heater to 120 degrees, or just below the medium setting. Run your hand through bathwater to test for hot spots.
