Southern Nevada CHIPs

Southern Nevada CHIPs Southern Nevada CHIPs, your Community Health Improvement Program, providing the right service to the right person at the right time.

Southern Nevada CHIPs is an idea born of an experienced firefighter/paramedic working in a busy system for over sixteen years. She witnessed nearly every imaginable reason for a 9-1-1 call for service. She encountered thousands of desperate people in their most vulnerable moment and circumstance. She realized that first responders have a unique perspective, and this perspective can be a tool to dr

amatically improve the health of the community when partnered with other social and service and health care providers. Southern Nevada CHIPs started in the Fall of 2013. The services of the program are provided by student interns from the university pursuing their Master's Degree in Social Work assigned to the fire department to complete their practicum requirement. Clients are referred to the student interns by the firefighters and paramedics who were encouraged to refer those that need help and services different than, or in addition to, fire suppression and/or emergency medical treatment and transport. Due to great demand (15 referrals/week), Southern Nevada CHIPs is transitioning from an unfunded student intern practicum placement into a non-profit organization so it can operate year-around with hired professionals and establish self-sufficiency and sustainability. Thank you for taking the time to read about our program. If you are able, please support the program!

Happy Mental Health Monday friends.

👉🏼DID YOU KNOW?
Simple water can contribute to your Mental Wellness?? How you ask? 👇🏾

Hydration and Cognitive Function: Staying properly hydrated is essential for optimal cognitive function. Dehydration can lead to difficulties in concentration, memory, and mood disturbances.

Stress Reduction: Being near water, whether it's a river, lake, or ocean, has been associated with stress reduction. The sound of water, such as waves or a babbling brook, can have a calming effect on the mind and help alleviate stress.

Physical Exercise: Water-related activities, such as swimming or water aerobics, provide a dual benefit. Exercise is known to positively impact mental health by releasing endorphins, and the buoyancy of water reduces the impact on joints, making it an accessible option for many.

Mindfulness and Relaxation: Water environments often promote mindfulness and relaxation. Watching the gentle flow of a stream or listening to rain can encourage a meditative state, promoting mental clarity and reducing anxiety.

Thermal Regulation: Taking a bath or shower can have a soothing effect on the body and mind. Warm water can help relax muscles and relieve tension, contributing to an overall sense of well-being.

Connection to Nature: Spending time near water allows individuals to connect with nature. Nature exposure has been linked to improved mood, reduced stress, and enhanced overall mental well-being.

It's important to note that while water-related activities can complement mental health, they are not a substitute for professional treatment, if someone is experiencing serious mental health issues. If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, we can help you get the assistance you need. Contact our resource center today!
