The members of Lascassas Volunteer Fire Department want to give a final thank you to the citizens of Lascassas and Rutherford County for all of their contributions and support throughout the years. We also want to recognize and thank all of the past volunteer firefighters and former leaders of the department for everything they have done to help our department and community.

With that said, we want to recognize our final Chief and selfless leader - Roger Moses. Roger is a U.S. Navy Veteran. He was a founding member of Walter Hill Fire Department in 1979 and left as a Lieutenant in 1990. He then served as a volunteer firefighter in Temple Terrace, Florida, until he returned to Lascassas in 2004. Chief Moses has since served our Lascassas Fire Department for almost twenty (20) years. Many of those years, Roger served as the Assistant Chief. After the retirement of Chief Trey Nunley, Roger has led our department as Chief for the last few years.

Chief Moses is like a father to all of us. He cares for the members of our community the same way. He has never asked us to undertake or perform any task that he was not willing to do himself. He has responded to several thousands of calls throughout the years - anytime - day or night. He is the most selfless individual we have ever witnessed and he continually gives to this community out of what can only be described as love.

Chief Moses always gave us inspiration to keep helping others, especially those in our community, and encouraged us to be the best version of ourselves. He always led by example and cared for all those he encountered. The amount of time Roger has devoted his life to maintaining the station, ensuring equipment readiness, scheduling, engine repairs, staffing personnel, managing paperwork/bills, and ensuring we each had the appropriate protective gear is endless.

Most people are unaware how much it really takes to run a fire station - let alone run it as a volunteer. We are all thankful and honored to be part of Rogers final team. If you see Chief Moses around, please be sure to say hello - he will be glad to get to know you if he doesn't know you already. Thank you for everything Roger. We love you.

Endings are sad… After 49 years of continuous service, this Sunday night, December 31, 2023 the Lascassas Volunteer Fire Department will man its fire station for the last time. As Rutherford County has grown, the local volunteer fire departments within the county have slowly been replaced by paid fire personnel employed by Rutherford County Government that can man the stations 24/7.

The Lascassas Volunteer Fire Department would like to take a moment and thank the community for supporting our efforts so generously and for so long. While this change is sad, we have two exciting announcements. The two primary fire trucks owned by our department are being sold to Rutherford County. This money is being donated to the newly formed Lascassas Community Center Board who will in the coming weeks begin the process of remodeling our current fire hall into a community center that will we hope serve this community for generations to come.

And YES, the rumors are true. There are plans to bring back the Lascassas Fish Fry. There is just something special about a community coming together around a meal and seeing old friends and making new ones.

Secondly, the current members of the LVFD are not done volunteering. The volunteer spirit is still strong within our organization and we are excited to be launching a new venture that will allow us to continue to serve those in need on their darkest day. Our organization will be rebranding and continuing as the Middle Tennessee Storm Response Team. Just this month, we have all been witness to just how quickly tornadoes can wreck a community. Our fire fighters will be transitioning to a fast response team that will go into areas affected by storms and help with cleanup and essential repairs on damaged homes. We hope to increase our membership with like-minded individuals who can take a day or two off work and join us.

Additionally, we will be launching “Serving Saturdays”, once a month our organization will come together to help community members in need with a service or building project, such as constructing a wheelchair ramp, an exterior repair, etc. More information on this will follow, but we hope you will consider volunteering or donating financially as we continue to serve our community.

Once again, thank you for all your generous support. We will miss being YOUR first responders.

A remarkable leader and a well deserved promotion. Congratulations!

Nunley promoted to patrol lieutenant

Patrol Sgt. Trey Nunley was promoted to lieutenant by Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh Monday.

Nunley will serve as lieutenant for the Patrol Division’s midnight shift.

“This is a very humbling career and I’ve been blessed to be part of it,” Nunley said. “I am honored the agency has the confidence in me to take this next step.”

He joined the Sheriff’s Office as a detention deputy in 1999 and quickly became a jail booking deputy.

Nunley was promoted as a patrol deputy in 2006 and sergeant in 2015.

In his career, Nunley served as an instructor in several classes.

He expanded the capabilities of the Mobile Command Center for law enforcement and public safety responses. He was tasked in helping develop safety plans for large scale events such as the annual Great Tennessee Air Show in Smyrna and NASCAR races at the Nashville Superspeedway.

Nunley worked with the Sheriff’s Office’s fire investigations unit.

He volunteered with the Lascassas Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years, serving nine years as chief.

“I wouldn’t be here today without the training and the experience at Lascassas Volunteer Fire Department,” Nunley said. “I learned people skills. I learned leadership and the emotion side of public safety. I learned how to cope with stress.”

Being part of the volunteer fire department prepared him for a lifetime career in public safety.

Lascassas and Milton Community:

We are requesting your help.

Tomorrow evening, the Rutherford County budget committee will vote on our 2023–24 funding level. Although the new Rutherford County fire station with paid personnel is under construction, realistically, the new fire station with the new paid firefighters will not be available to serve this community for at least six months or longer.

Due to the recent reductions in our county funding and Covid preventing our fish frys, our finances have suffered these past two years.
Without funding from Rutherford County, we will not be able to continue providing fire service for another year. Without our volunteers, our community will be without fire protection until the new station is complete.

We are requesting funding for one more year. Please contact and tag the budget committee commissioners listed below.

We also request that you attend the budget committee meeting Tuesday night May 16 at 5:30 PM at the courthouse.

Good Morning Lascassas Neighbors,

We are happy to announce that we are indeed thriving. Contrary to what a couple folks have to say we are doing pretty decent. Today we added thermal capability to our new unmanned aerial systems program. This enables us to provide better overwatch and situational awareness on fire calls, as well as an invaluable resource on missing persons and sensitive calls. This is a unique mission set for a volunteer department to be able to provide. It is something we take great pride in. It is through your support that we are able to lean on the cutting edge of technology to be able to provide such solutions in a unique community like this. We would like to thank StormPoint and GenPac Drones for the support and guidance while we added this capability.

Now for the apparent elephant in the room. Provided for you here below is an early proposal for budget considerations for FY2022-2023 Rutherford county budget. If you’ve got questions as to why our proposed county funding isn’t in-line with other volunteer departments, we’d invite you to listen to the budget hearings from May 16, 2022 on RCTV and draw your own conclusions. There are some tall things being stated that couldn’t be further from the truth. It was said our trucks don’t leave the station and we’re down to about 0 volunteers. We would challenge those allegations and invite anybody to come see us EVERY Monday night at 7pm for training. Come see with your own eyes the health of the department rather than hearsay.

We are committed to being good stewards of the money and resources that our community members and county members entrust us with. We take frugality very seriously and we have managed to do very well in that regard. We are blessed to have a community that supports us the way you do.

Our board of directors meets the first Monday of each month publicly and we’d welcome anyone that has questions or concerns about the way we do business to sit in. Come see us enough times and we may even ask you to size up a set of turnouts, train with us, hop on the truck and consider giving back to this community that we all love so much.

Here is what remains. No matter what budget items the committee comes to rest on, Lascassas VOLUNTEER Fire Department stands ready to respond, with a servants heart. Every. Single. Time.

It has proven to be a busy December for your Lascassas volunteers.

Unfortunately we did work several structure fires this month however with help from our mutual and automatic aid partners we were able to minimize the damage incurred to those structures. Strong work by all.

Winter weather showed up and we managed to fully staff the station during that time of increased need as we typically do during severe and inclement weather.

We also sent our Chief of Operations to assist StormPoint during the tornado emergency in Kentucky. If you haven’t had a chance to see what they do, take a second and check them out. Like us they are a nonprofit relying heavily on donations to continue to do amazing work not only for just Rutherford county, but just about anywhere they’re needed.

Merry Christmas from your Lascassas Volunteers.
