🚲 KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Video #2 E-Bike Rules of the Road! 🛑

E-bikes are an awesome way to get around town, enjoy the fresh air, and stay active—but as they surge in popularity, our officers are seeing an increase in unsafe riding and confusion over where they actually belong.

We want everyone to have fun, but our priority is keeping our community safe. Check out this quick video featuring Lieutenant T. Breslin and Investigator Z. Anwer to get the facts on what’s legal, what’s not, and how to avoid costly impound fees.

Parents, please take a few minutes to watch this with your kids so they know where they can safely and legally ride their wheels. Let's work together to keep Colonie's roads and parks safe for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike! 🤝

🚔 Cadet Training Night: EVOC & Traffic Stops 🚔

Tonight, our cadets took part in hands-on Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) and Traffic Stop training as part of the department’s Youth Driving Education Initiative. Investigators Leonardo and Anwer, along with Officers Kelly and Minarchi, led practical exercises and real-world scenarios focused on roadway safety, emergency response awareness, and vehicle stop tactics.

Cadets rotated through a modified EVOC course, where they got behind the wheel to practice maneuvering and decision-making under realistic conditions. Additional scenarios focused on properly initiating traffic stops, vehicle positioning, and officer safety during roadside encounters.

Another great night of realistic, hands-on training for our cadets.

In our Did you Know, Colonie series – we’re highlighting our community naloxone kits. Colonie’s EMS Department is a registered Opioid Overdose Prevention Program through NYS Department of Health distributing these kits in order to reduce the chance of a fatal overdose and connect people with resources to live in recovery. Over 4,000 kits have been distributed since 2022 and overdose deaths have also declined.

We encourage the community to be prepared by stocking naloxone in your first aid kit. You can visit your local pharmacy to buy naloxone, or one of our public distribution points to obtain a kit and complete the training online.

Placing a False Bomb – Public Place – Colonie Mohawk River Park

Incident Synopsis:

On Saturday May 16, 2026 the Colonie Police Department responded to the Colonie Mohawk River Park located at 71 Schermerhorn Road for a report about an individual who placed a device that appeared to be a bomb in the “Little Library” book nook located on the playground.

A little library is a public, neighborhood-based book exchange operating on a "take a book, share a book" honor system. Anyone can borrow books to read and, when finished, either return them or replace them with different books.

Colonie Police Investigators located the device. It is described as a water bottle containing a liquid, a mason jar top with battery terminal, battery, and red and green wires. The New York State Police Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) responded to the park and determined the device to be inoperable and incapable of causing harm.

Investigators were able to develop a suspect and arrested the defendant Brandon J. Arsenault at his residence in Cohoes during the early morning hours of May 17, 2026.

This case is active and ongoing as we continue to investigate Mr. Arsenault’s motivations for this behavior. The Colonie Police Department has been in contact with our federal partners at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to assist with the investigation. If any other citizens observed this activity or have information about Mr. Arsenault they are requested to contact Colonie Police Investigations at 518-783-2754.

Commendation:

The swift arrest was made possible by the efforts of a concerned citizen who observed Mr. Arsenault placing the inoperable device and reported this alarming behavior. The Colonie Police would also like to acknowledge the partnership with the New York State Police Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) for their rapid response and assistance.

Defendant:

Brandon J. Arsenault 26 years old – Cohoes NY

Charges:

PL 240.62 Placing a false bomb or hazardous substance in the first degree – Felony

Status:

Mr. Arsenault was arraigned in Colonie Town Court this morning and remanded to the Albany County Correctional Facility.
