Whether it's at our distribution centers, the Patroon Land Farm, or community food distributions, volunteers have been hard at work helping us get food to our neighbors in need. We love seeing the photos you've tagged us in! A big thanks to some of our recent groups: New York Farm Bureau, Heritage Financial Credit Union, KPMG, Bank of America, the Albany Chapter of the IIA, and Broadview Federal Credit Union.

Our Patroon Land Farm was proud host more than 200 volunteers for the Americorps New York Service Summit! This dedicated group helped plant cabbage, beets, and onions that will later be harvested and distributed to our partner agencies and neighbors in need.

A visit to the Farm offers hands-on opportunities for individuals and groups to help grow fresh, nutritious food for neighbors facing food insecurity while learning about sustainable agriculture. Sign up at regionalfoodbank.net/volunteer.

The Regional Food Bank is making a major investment in farm partnerships, with a goal of increasing distribution of farm-fresh food annually to 30 million pounds over the next 3–5 years. From supporting local growers and purchasing directly from family farms, to improving infrastructure in the regional charitable food network, the goal is to create stronger connections between farmers and families facing food insecurity.

With nearly 10,000 farms across our service area, the opportunity for growth is enormous, and so is the impact.

"Our overall investment in working with farms will be well-spent,” said CEO Tom Nardacci. “There are many synergies between food banks and farmers already. We have the scale, we have the distribution, we have the logistics, and we know where food can go. It’s just a matter of acquiring and managing those resources."

When Tom Nardacci, CEO of New York State’s Regional Food Bank, considers opportunities for sourcing more food, he sees limits to the amount of food that can be donated, rescued, or government-supplied. He also sees plenty of farms.  That landscape is the reason behind a new strategy putting much ...

Right now, soaring fuel costs are squeezing everyone - working families, seniors, and the entire Regional Food Bank network. Each month, the Regional Food Bank travels nearly 30,000 miles to distribute food throughout its vast 23-county service area. Fuel prices have increased costs of operating the Food Bank’s fleet of trucks by more than 54%. In May alone, we anticipate spending $10,000 more on fuel compared to this month last year. These dollars would have otherwise provided 30,000 meals to neighbors in need.

In partnership with low-income senior housing sites, the Food Bank’s Senior Food Delivery Program delivers nutritious food to seniors at their housing facilities every other week, ideally during weeks when transportation to a grocery store is unavailable. Thanks to support from The Schenectady Foundation, we've expanded in Schenectady County this year, including Mont Pleasant Senior Housing in Schenectady and Holyrood Housing in Scotia.

In observance of Memorial Day, the Regional Food Bank will be closed today, May 25, and will reopen tomorrow, May 26.
