The Lathrup Village Arboretum began as an idea for a space dedicated to tree education for community members of Lathrup Village. A one stop location for all to visit and enjoy a variety of trees that make up our urban forest. The Arboretum - officially recognized by the City as of 2026, is located at the cross roads of Bungalow Dr and Rainbow Dr and will be the center of a number of future community tree related events. Although this is an ambitious project with many years ahead of hard work, planning and fund raising, the Tree Committee is excited to work with City staff and community members to achieve all the goals the Arboretum will set to provide to the community.

Lathrup Village officials say investing in green infrastructure is a priority for the 100-year-old community.

We are thrilled to announce that Lathrup Village has been awarded a substantial grant funding from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for care and maintenance needed to revitalize the City’s urban forest. The Tree Committee is excited to begin working with the Michigan DNR, City staff and residents to grow a healthy and sustainable urban forest.

COMING SOON: City of Lathrup Village Tree Inventory 🌳🌲📋

A vital tool for managing a community urban forest is a citywide tree inventory. A tree inventory is a GIS (geographical information system) mapping tool that identifies exact location of city trees with site information. The information obtained through an inventory allows for identification of tree species that makeup the urban forest, current tree health/condition, maintenance needs and available planting locations.

The Lathrup Village Tree Committee will be performing this project over the next couple months to better understand the current state of the urban forest of Lathrup Village. This project is part of the long term goal of creating a comprehensive and sustainable urban forest master plan. Through the volunteer efforts of the Tree Committee, this project will benefit the city’s tree program at no cost to the city budget.

What will occur during the inventory process. Each tree within the city right-of-way, parks and city property will be visited. Species identification, measurement of the tree DBH (diameter at breast height) will be measured, and current condition. This information will be collected for the city’s use for priority maintenance needs and development of future plans and goals.

More updates will be provided over the course of the project. We look forward to sharing our findings during this initiative and appreciate the ongoing support of our community.

Lathrup Village 2026. Celebrating 24 years as an Arbor Day Foundation Tree City USA recipient. Community members joined the Tree Committee to plant a Red horse-chest near the playground at Municipal Park. Shout out to the Lathrup Village Parks & Rec committee for their joint effort in putting this annual event on.

Help shape our urban forest! As me meet to formulate a grant project proposal at our special tree committee meeting this upcoming Tuesday, April 21st we will look at the results of our resident input survey to identify top priorities of the community. Everyone is encouraged to fill out the survey to help us better serve the community with the care and management of the urban forest of Lathrup Village.
