🚗 48 Hours Along the Lincoln Highway

Summer starts with a full tank of gas and an open road.

Here's one way to spend 48 hours exploring south-central Pennsylvania along America's first coast-to-coast highway.

📍 Day 1: Gettysburg
Arrive in Gettysburg and spend the afternoon strolling downtown's shops, galleries, restaurants, and historic streets. Check in at Hilton Garden Inn Gettysburg before enjoying dinner and an evening walk through one of Pennsylvania's most beloved small towns.

📍 Day 2 Morning: Fort Loudoun & Big Mountain
Head west along the Lincoln Highway toward Fort Loudoun PA and make time for the scenic overlook atop Big Mountain. The sweeping views are worth every curve in the road.

📍 Day 2 Afternoon: Chambersburg
Summer means fresh fruit season in Franklin County. Stop at Shatzer Fruit Market for local peaches, a peach slushy, or whatever seasonal treat is calling your name before exploring downtown Chambersburg.

📍 Day 2 Evening: Caledonia State Park
Before heading home, take a drive through Caledonia State Park, where the Lincoln Highway passes historic sites like the Thaddeus Stevens Blacksmith Shop amid some of the corridor's most beautiful scenery.

Historic towns. Mountain views. Roadside markets. Hidden gems.

No rushing. No airport lines.

Just 48 hours of discovering what makes the Lincoln Highway one of Pennsylvania's most rewarding road trips.

🌄

Skip the Turnpike.

Take the road that winds through mountain gaps, historic towns, roadside diners, and places worth pulling over for.

This view is just one of the many reasons we love traveling the Lincoln Highway between Pittsburgh and Bedford. The journey offers a different pace—one where scenic overlooks, local businesses, and unexpected discoveries are part of the experience.

Need inspiration for your next weekend getaway? Earlier this spring, we mapped out a complete Pittsburgh-to-Bedford itinerary featuring overnight accommodations, museums, restaurants, shops, and attractions along the route.

📖 Check out "A Spring Weekend Road Trip: Pittsburgh to Bedford on the Lincoln Highway" in the Newsroom section of our website and start planning your next adventure. https://lhhc.org/news-events/newsroom.html/article/2026/04/07/a-spring-weekend-road-trip-pittsburgh-to-bedford-on-the-lincoln-highway

After all, summer road trip season is officially here.

🧳 Have you signed the guestbook yet?

One of the newest additions to our Ship Hotel exhibit is a guestbook where visitors can leave their name, hometown, and memories of the Lincoln Highway. Whether you're a longtime road enthusiast, a first-time visitor, or someone with fond memories of the Ship Hotel itself, we'd love to hear your story.

Take a moment to explore the exhibit, admire the scale model of the famous roadside landmark, and add your name to the growing list of travelers who have stopped by.

After all, every great journey deserves an entry in the logbook.

I’ll let you in on a little secret: my love of the Lincoln Highway started because I wanted to avoid the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Years ago, while looking for a different way to travel east from the Pittsburgh area, I found myself following the old Lincoln Highway through small towns, over mountain ridges, and past places I never would have discovered from the interstate. What began as a detour quickly became a tradition.

That’s the thing about a Sunday drive. It’s not about getting there faster. It’s about finding something unexpected along the way.

So this Sunday, take the scenic route. Roll the windows down. Stop when something catches your eye. Grab lunch in a small town. Pull over for a photo. Make the journey part of the destination.

The Lincoln Highway has been inviting travelers to slow down and explore for more than a century. We think that's a tradition worth keeping alive.

Where would your Sunday drive take you?

What if the best part of the trip wasn’t the destination… but the road getting there? 🛣️

With travelers heading east across Pennsylvania this summer - including visitors making their way to Philadelphia for World Cup events - we’re making the case for skipping the Turnpike and rediscovering the Lincoln Highway instead.

In the latest edition of Lindsay’s Lincoln Log, Lindsay reflects on how avoiding the Turnpike led her to discover the small towns, roadside attractions, mountain scenery, diners, and unexpected moments that make US 30 such a memorable journey across Pennsylvania.

Sometimes the slower road really is the better one. ❤️
