Greater Latrobe School District

Greater Latrobe School District We take great pride in being a student-centered school district with diverse course offerings and hi U.S.

The Greater Latrobe School District is located in southwestern Pennsylvania at the foothills of the Laurel Highlands. It is approximately 50 miles east of downtown Pittsburgh and 30 miles southwest of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Route 30 bisects much of the district, which encompasses the City of Latrobe, Youngstown Borough, and Unity Township, with approximately 30,000 residents. We take great prid

e in being a student-centered school district with diverse course offerings and high academic standards for our pupils. We strive to be progressive in promoting teaching techniques that appeal to the various learning styles of pupils. During strategic planning, members of the community who represent various businesses, industries, and parent organizations challenged educators to develop and use assessment systems that are results-oriented. Our Strategic Plan emphasizes the development of communication skills and mathematics. Specifically, we expect our students to write and to write well. Additionally, students will be asked to participate in the development and delivery of speeches, and their ability to read and write will be assessed through standardized and local testing measures. In mathematics, we have implemented pre- and post-testing and quarterly assessment procedures at various grade levels. This program is designed to streamline the curriculum so that we avoid unnecessary repetition and prepare students to make practical application of concepts taught in mathematics.

Greater Latrobe Senior High School was honored to host Dr. Glenn Kashurba for a presentation on the history and impact of Flight 93 to commemorate the upcoming 25th anniversary of September 11th. Dr. Kashurba is a nationally recognized Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist with a broad and distinguished medical career as a Disaster Psychiatrist. When Flight 93 crashed 6 miles from his office in rural Somerset County, Dr. Kashurba responded and volunteered with the American Red Cross to provide support to the grieving families at the Shanksville crash site. He subsequently chronicled the experiences of local residents who helped during the disaster with his book Courage After the Crash. Kashurba donated his author's royalties to 9/11 and children's charities.

During his presentation, Dr. Kashurba shared critical insights into courage, resilience, and community strength, including sharing the heroism of the brave passengers and crew who fought back to protect our nation, the extraordinary compassion shown by Somerset County residents, first responders, and local volunteers, and teaching students how communities heal and find strength through unity after a national tragedy. Thank you to Dr. Kashurba for this powerful day of history and remembrance.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make the 11th Annual GOAL Golf Outing + Paint-n-Sip such a tremendous success! Because of the generosity of our sponsors, attendees, donors, volunteers, and supporters, Go2GOAL, Inc. is proud to present $16,500 to the Greater Latrobe Partners in Education Foundation (GLPIEF). This contribution will directly benefit the Life Skills, Learning Support, and Autistic Support classrooms throughout the Greater Latrobe School District, helping provide meaningful opportunities and resources for local students. We were honored to have representatives from Lead Sponsor SecondHalf Coach Wealth Management, GLPIEF, and the Greater Latrobe School District come together for this special check presentation. Having so many of the people who helped make this gift possible in one place made the moment even more meaningful. This is what community looks like — coming together, giving back, and investing in our students.

Thank you to everyone who played a part in making this possible and for continuing to support our mission to educate, connect, and strengthen our community!

At Greater Latrobe Junior and Senior High Schools, trained 8th grade mentors, known as W.E.B. leaders (Where Everybody Belongs), and trained high school mentors, known as Link Crew leaders, assisted teachers and counselors in running an orientation program on the first day of school for incoming 7th and 9th graders. Students participated in large group icebreakers as well as small group activities designed to break down barriers and build relationships. WEB leaders and Link Crew leaders will continue to meet with 7th graders and 9th graders throughout the entire year for academic and social follow-ups as well as individual leader initiated contacts to ensure all students are confidently navigating their way through their first year at the Junior and Senior High Schools.

Greater Latrobe Senior High students in the *new* AP Business course used hands-on project-based learning as an introduction to the topics they will be learning about in the class throughout the year. They completed a Chips Ahoy Mining Activity to learn about productivity, scarcity, opportunity cost, revenue, profit, teamwork, communications, capital, risk, and decision-making. It was a sweet way to introduce core business disciplines! 🍪✨

Thank you to the Greater Latrobe and Derry Area Interact Clubs, who volunteered their time at Friday night’s “Backyard Brawl” football game to collect donations for the Rotary Club of Latrobe’s “Food for Thought” Backpack Program. Thanks to their efforts as well as all of the generous community members who donated, both groups were able to raise an impressive total of $3,100 for the Backpack Program, which benefits students from both Greater Latrobe and Derry Area school districts. This equates to 258 backpacks filled with food to help feed students every weekend for the entire school year! THANK YOU to both school communities who came together last night for this great cause! 🙌

Running back A.J. Yeboah watched a lot of Latrobe football games from the sidelines last year with a bum ankle. He had a much better view of the Wildcats’ season-opening victory. Yeboah got reaquainted with football and had a record-breaking night as Latrobe and Derry renewed their longtime ri...
