It is with profound sadness that the Laurel Volunteer Rescue Squad announces the passing of Richard “Pops” Walker.

Rich joined the Laurel Volunteer Rescue Squad in 2016, where he earned his EMT certification and quickly became a dedicated and respected member of the organization. Through his commitment to patient care, training, and service to the community, he rose through the ranks and ultimately served as EMS Captain.

In addition to his EMS leadership, Rich became a certified ambulance driver and driver trainer, playing a vital role in the development of new members. He dedicated countless hours to mentoring and training new EMTs, sharing his knowledge, experience, and passion for serving others. His patience, guidance, and willingness to teach helped shape many of the providers who continue to serve our community today.

Rich’s leadership, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to helping others left a lasting impact on generations of members. Whether through his guidance, encouragement, or simply his presence, he helped shape the culture and traditions that make LVRS what it is today.

Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences are with the Walker family during this incredibly difficult time, as well as all of the members, past and present, who had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside him.

Rest easy, Pops. Thank you for your years of service, your leadership, your mentorship, and your friendship. You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.

This past Saturday, Company 49 took the opportunity to sharpen our skills with some hands on heavy vehicle extrication training. Throughout these evolutions, our firefighters and probationary members worked through multiple scenarios focusing on different methods of vehicle stabilization and techniques for rapid patient access. Each scenario pushed our crews to think critically, adapt quickly, and operate efficiently under pressure.

Training like this ensures we’re always ready to face the unexpected and deliver the highest level of service when it matters most.

A big thank you to Goodman Services and AL’s Towing for the invite and outstanding hospitality! We truly appreciate the opportunity to train alongside you and continue building strong partnerships.
