Laurel Volunteer Fire Department The Laurel Volunteer Fire Department operates to uphold its motto, "Service for Others." The first Fire Chief was David M. Fischer.

The idea of the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1898 after a fire on Main Street in which 12 buildings, along with the Presbyterian Church, were destroyed. Following in the footsteps of that fire, the City Council worked on the necessary legislation and a constitution and by-laws where written and four years later the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department was born. Orginally there were 3 companies in the Laurel proper; one at 8th and Montgomery, one at 5th and Montgomery and one on Washington Blvd by the Little Tavern. It wasn't until 1935 that the Company consolidated into one location at the Old Phelps and Shaffer store on 9th and Montgomery. With much needed growing room, the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department moved, in 1954, across the street to the old Laurel Elementary School No. 1. Today, the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department is housed on the corner of Cherry Lane and Van Dusen Road, in a building that they moved into in October of 1990. The current building contains offices, a gym, a kitchen, meeting rooms and bunk rooms for male and female fire fighters.

How can we be in two places at once? Easy, we have the best volunteers in the biz! Not only do we have our Open House today, October 10th, from 12 - 3pm at our fire station, 7411 Cherry Lane, but we will also represent our station at the City's Pride Day Celebration at Gude Park from 11am - 4pm!

So after you have stopped by and checked out one event, be sure to head over to the other and in both instances, you can speak with our members about how YOU can become part of a winning team! ❤️🤍💛🖤

As we close out Fire Prevention Week, theme is "Charge into Fire Safety," make sure to stop by the fire station tomorrow, October 10th, and enjoy our Open House!

We'll be there from 12 - 3pm, 7411 Cherry Lane, with tours of our apparatus, lots of great information from local organizations, demonstrations, giveaways and if you are thinking about volunteering opportunities, talk with our members about how you can join and help your community! ❤️💛🤍🖤 We'll see ya soon!

Finally, the LVFD members were excited to show off their newest apparatus, Engine 810B! The crew was thrilled to be able to park the new engine out front of the banquet hall so all those that showed up could see our new addition! Keep your eyes out….Engine 810B still has a few things that we need to add to it before it is road ready, but it will be dedicated soon and then put into service! ❤️💛🖤🤍🚒

Thanks to the Banquet Committee members Riley Law, Dave Ballard, Ed Schultz and Simone McCumber for creating such a great atmosphere for our 124th Banquet!

Then came the award, presented by Laurel Council member Adrian Simmons, that is voted on by the members themselves, Firefighter of the Year….

Congratulations to Min Hwang on receiving this prestigious honor for 2026! Min is a team player, leader and compassionate member and it was easy to see why he received the highest votes from our members. Congratulations, Min…you deserve it! ❤️🖤🤍💛

Next, we were excited to present the Chief’s Awards and we had a great group that deserved this prestigious recognition.

Chief Brian Cox started with presenting recognition for a life saving incident to Jim Codespote, Wren Thomas-Rickenbrode and Min Hwang. Then he recognized Line Officers Willie McCluney, Mike Falanga, Riley Law and Dave Riley for their Leadership this past year.

Then, Chief Cox recognized the Top 10 members for their Hours of Service, with the top hours going to Wren Thomas-Rickenbrode!

Then, Chief Cox took a moment to recognize Jim Codespote and Brad Lovell for their hard work and long hours of working on the specs and on site visits for our newest engine, 810B.

But it wasn’t just the Chief giving out the thanks that evening! Each of the Line Officers had a surprise for Chief Cox, a custom made radio harness with his name stamped into the leather.

Then Chief Cox had a little fun and gave out some humorous awards in recognition of some fun and quirky moments that happened this year. Congratulations to all of our Firefighter/EMS members on the great work this year! ❤️🤍💛🖤

We had an extra special award last night, the Captain Richard C. Grimes Memorial Award, which has only been given out a handful of times over the decades, and the recipient was Chaplain Mike Sellner!

He received this well deserving award for all his years of making sure members got recognized for their service, providing support to our Firefighters and EMS members, giving comfort to members in need and assisting in every aspect of our station’s inner workings! Congratulations, Mike! ❤️🤍💛🖤

We had the distinct pleasure of recognizing two members for their 50 years of dedicated service to the Laurel community.

First up, join us is congratulating Craig A. Moe for his dedicated service, followed by Philip B. Techau, who has proudly stood up for our station for five decades! Both are shining examples of our motto, “Service for Others”! Thank you both giving up many hours with family to help serve our community!
