Drowning isn't always obvious. A swimmer in trouble usually can't call for help because they're focused on keeping their head above water and breathing.

If you notice these warning signs:

• Alert a lifeguard immediately, if one is present.
• Call 911 or ask someone nearby to call.
• Reach or throw a flotation device to help the person get to safety.
• Begin CPR if needed.

A Heat Advisory is in effect for Cumberland and Sampson counties from 11 AM to 8 PM today. Compounding effects from multiple days of dangerous heat and minimal overnight relief (lows only in the lower-to-mid-70s) will increase the risk for heat related illnesses. Be sure to drink plenty of water, stay out of the sun for long periods, and check on relatives and neighbors.

Scotland County Health and Human Services is notifying the community of Heat Health Alerts for August 18–20, with forecasted maximum heat index values of 103°F, 101°F, and 104°F, respectively.
