The Lavaca City Cemetery is an important part of Lavaca's history. Located on the east side of North Davis Street, it extends from what was Ingraham Alley just north of the old Methodist Church to just north of West Houston Street. Pictured below is the headstone for Dr. Peyton Bibb (P.B.) Coker. Dr. Coker and his wife Sarah came to Lavaca in 1870. Records show he fought in the Civil War for the Union at the Battle of Shiloh. He developed extensive cattle and farming interests in Big Creek Township in addition to practicing medicine. Dr. Coker helped establish the Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge in Lavaca and also served for a short time as Justice of the Peace. Their daughter Amanda Zorena "Rena" Coker Woodruff married Joseph E. Woodruff, and they lived out their lives in the Lavaca area.

The Lavaca Municipal Complex, otherwise known as City Hall, is where most city business takes place. Building permits, dog licenses, utility payments, questions about city ordinances, meetings of the city council, and much more is done at city hall. The city purchased the 'Berry Shed' property on West Main in 1979 and began construction on the new city hall in 1980. The city hall and park was dedicated on July 25, 1981, and the event was well attended. An addition and remodel was completed in November 2001 to add additional storage space and a hip roof. Pictured below is the original building and the remodeled version.

The City of Fort Smith is implementing VOLUNTARY water conservation measures. Therefore we will also ask our customers to conserve water. Use the even-odd number address system to do things like filling pools or watering lawns, gardens and other vegetation. And please AVOID doing ANY of these activities during the hours of 9 am to 7 p.m. These measures are voluntary but following them will protect the regions water supply and reduce the need for mandatory conservation measures.

When the first bell rings on Tuesday morning, Jessica Sotherland and Ashlee Green will begin their 19th year of teaching together at Lavaca Elementary School. These ladies are not only best friends, they share many things in common - both are proud graduates of Lavaca Public Schools, class of 2003. Both earned degrees in Early Childhood Education from UAFS. Both earned a Masters Degree in Educational Theory and Practice from ASU in 2017. Jessica always knew she wanted to be a teacher and Ashlee decided to become an educator early in college. What is their favorite thing about teaching? Ashlee: when you see a student's light bulb come on when they learn how to solve a problem. Jessica: watching her student's grow and learn. These two ladies are a great asset to Lavaca Public Schools and our community!

PSA: As part of our intersection improvement project beginning on 8/17/26 West Columbus St at the intersection of N. Davis will be closed for about 2 weeks. East Houston at the intersection of Hwy 253 will be closed for 2-3 days. There will be 2 lanes of both N. Davis and Hwy 253 will be open during this time. Located at 305 West Main Street, this city owned building houses the Lavaca Museum. Jack James operates the museum which is open on Saturday mornings from 9 am till 12 pm. History and artifacts from Lavaca and the surrounding area can be found here. Go by and see Mr. James! He would love to chat with you about the history of our community! The City of Lavaca supports the museum through the General Fund by providing the building, utilities, and maintenance.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Cove Creek Construction will be in town over the next several weeks making improvements to the following intersections in Lavaca: Barbara Lane at Highway 96, Barbara Lane at South River Road, Dogwood Street at Highway 96, Birch Street at Highway 96, W Birch Street at Quincy Street, Quincy Street at West Main, West Columbus Street at North Davis Street, West Houston Street at North Davis Street, and East Houston Street at Highway 253. Please be careful traveling in these areas when construction workers and equipment are present.

Did you know there was a library in Lavaca? Located at 100 South Davis Street in a building owned by the City of Lavaca, the Scott-Sebastian Regional Library provides library services to the citizens of Lavaca! Doris Dooly has been the library clerk for 4 years. The library is open Tuesday from noon till 5 pm and Thursday from
8 am till 1 pm. If they don't have a book you want put in a request and they will get it for you. Doris says the local library is a vital part of our community and serves many senior citizens and moms of home-schooled students. The summer reading program for children is very popular and many patrons stop by to use the copier or to access Wi-Fi. Computers are also available for use by adults and children. If you have a library card you can download e-books to your electronic device including Kindle. The City of Lavaca supports the Library program through the General Fund by furnishing the building, utilities, and building maintenance.
