A question I hear a lot is, "Why can't we just get a grocery store?"

Grocery stores are private businesses that evaluate population growth, traffic, purchasing patterns, infrastructure, land costs, and profitability before choosing a location.

Many Texas cities compete for grocery stores by offering incentives. Recent examples include:• Sunnyvale – about $3 million• Orange – about $1.5 million• Buda – more than $20 million

These examples show that attracting a grocery store often requires significant investment.

While grocery stores are valuable to residents, most grocery items are exempt from Texas sales tax, so they generate limited sales tax revenue. Because of this, city leaders must carefully weigh any incentive package to ensure it benefits the community long term.

For Lavon, attracting a grocery store requires the right sites, infrastructure, transportation access, development partnerships, and a strong business case.

As your City Council representative, I support responsible economic development that expands our tax base, improves infrastructure, and attracts the retail and dining options residents want.

Growth alone doesn't bring a grocery store but strategic planning and investment can help make it happen.

Two cities, one vision: Allen and McKinney launch 121 North to brand their shared SH 121 corridor as an entertainment and business hub. 🛣️ 🏗️

With over 20 projects in the works—including office space, retail, restaurants, hotels and unique attractions like a surf lagoon—this stretch of highway is seeing unprecedented activity. City leaders say the collaboration will position the corridor as a top choice for businesses and families looking for intentional growth and quality of life.

UPDATE ON SH 78 SPEED LIMIT CHANGE

At Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, we approved an ordinance to lower the speed limit on a section of State Highway 78 within the City of Lavon.

After conducting a traffic engineering study, TxDOT recommended reducing the speed limit between FM 6 and Lake Road from 60 mph to 55 mph. The speed limit from Lake Road to SH 205 will remain unchanged at 50 mph.

This recommendation came directly from TxDOT based on traffic data, roadway conditions, crash history, and continued growth in our area. Under Texas law, cities must follow the results of these engineering studies when establishing speed limits on state highways.

The goal of this change is simple: improve safety for everyone traveling through Lavon while keeping traffic moving efficiently on one of our busiest corridors.

A few important notes:
• This was a TxDOT study and recommendation
• TxDOT will handle the signage updates
• No direct financial impact to the city
• The change only affects the section between FM 6 and Lake Road

As Lavon continues to grow, we will continue working with TxDOT and regional partners to make sure our roads remain safe for residents, families, and visitors.

Thank you to everyone who stays engaged and follows what’s happening in our community.

Over the past several days, there has been a lot of discussion on social media regarding the proposed zoning change related to a future data center development in Lavon. Public input is important, and I respect that residents have questions and concerns. However, a large amount of misinformation is also being shared, and I believe it is important to clarify some facts.

MYTH: “The city already approved the data center.”

FACT: The city council approved a zoning change not unrestricted construction approval. Any future project would still be required to go through permitting, infrastructure review, environmental requirements, operational regulations, and ongoing city oversight.

MYTH: “This will become an unregulated crypto mining operation.”

FACT: This is one of the biggest misconceptions being circulated online. Many of the problematic crypto mining operations people reference were built outside city limits with little or no municipal oversight. This project would fall under city ordinances, regulations, inspections, and enforcement. That means the city maintains control over noise limits, operating requirements, infrastructure standards, traffic planning, landscaping, and compliance enforcement.

MYTH: “The data center will overload the local power grid.”

FACT: This site is expected to include a dedicated power line connected directly to the GPL power plant. This helps reduce strain on existing residential infrastructure and also creates the potential for excess generated power to be sold back into the grid.

MYTH: “The city gets nothing out of this.”

FACT: Projects like this can bring long-term tax revenue, infrastructure improvements, skilled jobs, construction opportunities, and additional commercial investment into the community. Cities across the country are competing for data infrastructure projects because of the long-term economic potential they provide when properly regulated.

MYTH: “Supporting this means choosing developers over residents.”

FACT: Supporting regulated development inside city limits means residents actually maintain MORE oversight and accountability through local ordinances, public meetings, development agreements, inspections, and enforcement. The alternative in many areas has been industrial development outside city control with far fewer restrictions and much less accountability.

I ran for city council to represent this community and to help ensure that Lavon remains a safe, welcoming, and family oriented place to live and raise children including my own children. Every decision I make is viewed through that lens.

You may agree or disagree with this zoning change, and that is completely fair. But I believe discussions should be based on facts, transparency, and respectful conversation rather than fear or misinformation.

I will continue working to make decisions based on what I believe is in the long-term best interest of Lavon, its residents, and future generations.

It was an honor to be present for the Life Saving Award presentation to 10 year old Leah James, who showed extraordinary courage on October 1, 2025, when she saved her brother Logan’s life after he began choking during a viral challenge. Leah stayed calm, recognized the emergency, and performed abdominal thrusts that dislodged the candy and ultimately saved him. Her heroic actions and the lifesaving skills shared with her by her mother through the Lavon Police Department’s Babysitter Club program made all the difference.
