Quick reminder...the Lawrence Veterans Day Parade Association's sponsorship window to support our 9th annual Veterans Day parade and supporting programs will close on Sept 25. If any individual or organization is interested please message us or email us: [email protected] or attend our next parade meeting at 5 PM, 1 Sept in Lawrence Public library. Since January, the parade association's supporting programs' funding to Heartland Community Health Clinic has provided funds allowing over 40 needy veterans to receive dental care. Lastly, this year's parade is on November 14, 2026.

We have a new community partner; Right at Home. Their veterans programs are a great fit with our mission to support local veterans. They will have flyers and a vehicle in our Nov parade. Welcome aboard Monica and the Right at Home team!

On July 1, the Lawrence Veterans Day Parade Association (LVDPA) was honored to expand our support to local veterans by donating $3500 to The Battle Within. This sponsorship covers the exculusive use by a Douglas County veteran for their 5 day PTSD support program. Thank you Lawrence/Douglas County residents and businesses for your continuing support of LVDPA and our mission to recognize and support local veterans.

Flag Day is a celebration of the American flag that occurs each year on June 14, the anniversary of the flag’s official adoption.

What we know fondly as the “Stars and Stripes” was adopted by the Continental Congress as the official American flag on June 14, 1777, during the Revolutionary War. Colonial troops fought under many different flags with various symbols—rattlesnakes, pine trees, and eagles—and slogans—”Don’t Tread on Me,” “Liberty or Death,” and “Conquer or Die,” to name a few.

The Declaration of Independence made the adoption of an American flag necessary. Previously, each colony or special interest had its own flag.

On that 14th of June, Congress made the Flag Resolution of 1777, stating: “The flag of the United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white, with a union of thirteen stars of white on a blue field …” The official announcement of the new flag was not made until Sept. 3, 1777.

”Flag Day” has been celebrated as a patriotic occasion for many decades, but President Woodrow Wilson made the observance official on May 30, 1916, by a presidential proclamation.
