Homeless Resource Center We offer rest and resources to those experiencing homelessness

I think the cool thing about community is that it brings a lot of people with different life experiences together and basically says,

“Take the different parts of each of your life stories and create something beautiful together.”

Not every day is amazing, but every day is progress, together.

The sum total is that we are better together than we are doing this life thing all alone.

So, you, our community.

Whether you receive services at HRC or give so that services can happen, we want to take a minute on this Thursday to say, THANK YOU!

Community can be difficult and community can be beautiful, but we believe that through consistently showing up each day makes us individually and collectively better.

It also makes our community better because it proves possibility.

What once felt impossible is slowly taking shape through compassion, consistency, second chances, accountability, laughter, honest conversations, shared meals, dedicated volunteers, caring staff, and people choosing not to give up on one another.

That’s community.

And while none of us can solve everything alone, together we are creating spaces where people can rest, reconnect, heal, grow, and begin again.

Thank you for being part of this story with us. Thank you for believing people matter. Thank you for continuing to show up.

We are better because of each other. ❤️

Have you had the opportunity to meet Victoria, our newest addition to the team and the leader of all people and programs at HRC!?

We are SO EXCITED she is here!

Learn more about Victoria here and comment below to welcome her to the team!

Victoria has spent most of her working life in the service industry - prioritizing the needs of the people she is serving and the people she is leading, while building systems and structures to support continued growth and planning for future needs.

Born in the Azore Islands off the coast of Portugal, Victoria spent her childhood moving frequently. Victoria spent many years doing community outreach and service alongside her parents, who worked in law enforcement and pastored a small, neighborhood church. It was during these years that she discovered her love of community and heart for service. Her late mother had one philosophy: leave people better than you found them, and Victoria is intentional in weaving that into the fabric of her everyday life.

Victoria has spent the last 19 years working her way up to a corporate leadership position. As a business leader, she was successful in building foundations needed for continued organizational growth, always keeping sight of what mattered most; the people she served. When the opportunity arose to use her experiences as a business leader and focus them on her passion for community care and relationship building as the Director of Operations at HRC, she knew immediately that it was the right fit.

Victoria has been married to her best friend since high school, Nick, for ten years and together they have two children, Oliver and Charlie.

Victoria loves traveling, cooking with her husband and spending time with her friends and family in Lawrence.

Today we kicked off our partnered with Washed Ministries!

In 3 hours they provided 25 showers and 5 loads of laundry on top of wifi and connection time for our guests hanging outside at HRC.

Here's the big question!

How many gallons of water were used to provide this service?

*They are super cool and put a meter on their water hose and reimburse our org for the water!

Washed Ministries will be with us from Noon to 4pm every Tuesday and Thursday all summer long!

“It is for us the living… to be dedicated here to the unfinished work…” — Abraham Lincoln

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance and gratitude for the many who gave their lives in service and sacrifice. But perhaps one of the greatest ways we honor that sacrifice is by how we choose to live.

Today at HRC, we celebrated by helping our guests do exactly that: live life fully. Sharing meals, laughter, community, sunshine, karaoke, and moments of joy together.

Because honoring sacrifice is not only about remembering those who gave so much. It is also about making good use of the life, freedom, dignity, and community we have been given.

Thank you to Nick and the teams at both Ace Hardware’s here in town for sponsoring us to have a grill & hotdogs!

🍽️ Help Us Feed Our Community Next Week! ❤️

Next Tuesday and Saturday at LINK, we don’t currently have volunteer meal teams signed up, so our HRC team will be making lunch in-house!

We’re excited to make it work, but we could use a little community help to make these meals special.

🥔 Tuesday: Baked Potato Bar
Thanks to an incredible donation of potatoes, we’re planning a loaded baked potato lunch!

Needed:
🥓 Bacon bits
🥄 Sour cream
🧈 Butter

🍝 Saturday: Spaghetti Lunch

Needed:
🥩 30 pounds of ground beef

If you'd like to help by donating any of these items, we would be incredibly grateful. Every item helps create a meal that feels warm, welcoming, and dignified for our guests.

📍 Drop-off times:

🏠 HRC

Poem of the Week

Each week we're going to be highlighting a poem created through our Creative Writing Class with Brian Daldorph, held Wednesdays at 5:00 PM at HRC.

Writing creates space for expression, healing, storytelling, and community. We are grateful for the voices, experiences, and creativity shared each week.

This week's poem:

"Du***ss Smile"
By Kelli Tigerstrom

My face tells the truth
even if I’m politely lying to you,
if only my du***ss
knew how to smile—
I can’t be disingenuous
even if I wanted to—
my lop-sided, stroke-face smile,
the muscles won’t cooperate
and refuses to engage the du***ss
mechanical smiling mask.

I cannot get it to load—
it’s dead on the tracks.
It’s not that I’m a terrible liar
but there are things that just don’t need
to be said. Those incendiary words
get louder and scream inside my head.

Acquiescing is a concession
and though my face feels like it’s going to catch fire:
“Yes, sir, I agree with your stupid words,”
although your constant need to be right
is a liability, but no one cares
and I am so outta there
laughing at you and running
down the road
with a full du***ss smile!

Interested in writing, sharing stories, or simply listening? Join us Wednesdays at 5:00 PM.
