We’ve begun the process of checking on our Douglas County Kansas Master Gardeners Micro Grant recipients from 2025! Last June, applications were opened for gardens that supported the Master Gardener’s mission “share[ing] research-based, horticultural information with residents of Douglas County, in partnership with Extension.” Recipients could receive up to $500 from the mini grants to support a new or existing vegetable, fruit, or pollinator garden project. These check-ins help ensure that the gardens are thriving and getting the support they need, as well as offer the opportunity to see if there are any additional resources we can help provide through the extension office! Since applications were limited to public schools and community gardens, so as to support public access to gardens and programming, odds are you’ve probably wandered past one of these gardens or recognize some of the photos. We can’t wait to see how these gardens continue to grow and flourish!
Does this grant sound like something that would benefit your own community garden project? Keep an eye out for future announcements here on our social media!

Ants? In my peonies?? It’s more likely than you think. While it may be a slight annoyance to have to shake ants off the blooms before bringing them in to enjoy, ants and peonies share an important symbiotic relationship. The ants get a tasty snack in the form of delicious nectar and the peonies get protection from other insects. Other insects might be more interested in chewing on the petals or leaves but because the ants are invested in their tasty treat production machine, they guard it from other bugs. To learn more about ants in peonies (and perhaps dispel a few a myths about their relationship) check out this article from K-State Horticulturalist Matthew McKernan https://extension.k-state.edu/news-and-publications/news/stories/2026/05/horticulture-peonies.html
