ICYMI: New national data is showing a sharp decline in children receiving SNAP food assistance under H.R. 1, with Kansas families already feeling the consequences. Since the enactment of the federal H.R. 1 legislation, more than 21,000 Kansans have lost SNAP assistance, including over 10,000 Kansas children. “In Kansas, this will mean more children falling through the cracks, more pressure on schools and food banks, and greater hardship for families already struggling with high grocery and housing costs,” said Haley Kottler. “This has real implications for Kansas children to access the nutrition they need to learn, grow, and thrive.”

Kansas Appleseed is alarmed following new national data showing a sharp decline in children receiving SNAP food assistance under H.R. 1, with Kansas families already feeling the consequences.

Since the enactment of the federal H.R. 1 legislation, more than 21,000 Kansans have lost SNAP assistance, including over 10,000 Kansas children.

“These are not just abstract numbers. These are Kansas kids losing access to food,” said Haley Kottler, Senior Campaign Director at Kansas Appleseed.

Kansas Appleseed warned that H.R. 1’s SNAP changes threaten not only household food security, but the broader nutrition safety net that Kansas families rely on. SNAP participation is a critical link to other nutrition programs, including free school meals, SUN Bucks, and the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). In Kansas, school meal access depends heavily on direct certification systems tied to SNAP enrollment. When families lose SNAP, children can lose their pathway to school breakfast and lunch, and summer nutrition support, while school districts face new challenges in identifying and connecting eligible students to meal programs.

We urge Congress to intervene before federal SNAP cost shifts force Kansas into deeper cuts that put more low-income families and children at risk of hunger. This next wave of harm is not inevitable. It is preventable.

In 1956, the "Triple Play" scandal exposed how the practice of electing judges enabled backroom deals, eroding public trust. Public outrage translated into action. Kansans began pushing for a structural change to prevent such abuses in the future by proposing a constitutional amendment to remove Supreme Court selection from direct partisan elections and political appointment. This system, which prioritizes legal qualifications, democratic accountability, and independence, has remained in place since 1958.

On August 4, Kansas voters will go to the polls to determine the future of the Kansas Supreme Court. Will we keep our current merit-based process, or will we return to the days of backroom deals and corruption?

Kansas Appleseed stands in support of the Fines and Fees Justice Center (FFJC). They highlight that individuals living paycheck to paycheck and communities of color are disproportionately affected by fines and fees associated with the criminal justice system. The consequences of being unable to pay these fines can be severe, leading to an endless cycle of debt and punishment.

Kansas has made some great strides; however, continuing to address how fines and fees are leveraged and ending license suspensions due to unpaid fines and fees, is vital to help Kansans thrive.

Check out FFJC's new report, The Cost We No Longer Pay: How Fines and Fees Reform Delivered Billions in Relief for Families here:

People living paycheck-to-paycheck and communities of color are disproportionately impacted by criminal justice fines and fees. The consequences for being unable to afford to pay them can be severe and result in an endless cycle of debt and punishment.  Since its founding in 2018, the Fines and Fee...
