Mission

The Mayor’s Health Task Force (MHTF) is a broad-based collaborative of health care, social service providers, environmental groups, academic and research institutions, local businesses, community leaders, city planners and visionaries whose mission is to “develop healthy public health policies and activities that accommodate the changing conditions of the total community and promote impro

vement in the quality of life of its citizens.”

The MHTF serves as an advisory board to the mayor by placing public health issues high on the political agenda of the city and establishing new partnerships that build community capacity to address health disparities. The Task Force is a comprehensive effort by community activists to move Lawrence forward as a healthy city in the broadest possible terms. Vision
The vision of the MHTF is a healthy, safe, and thriving community for all. Using a combination of three public health frameworks- Collective Impact, City Resilience, and Health in All Policies, the MHTF identifies health disparities and addresses socioeconomic factors that impact the health of residents, through the individual and collective work of our working groups:

• Behavioral Health
• Healthy Active Living
• Research Initiative

Among our health focus areas, though not listed, is Substance Use, which has been woven into the work plan of each of the other groups. Activities
• Capacity Building Trainings • Health Fairs
• Citywide Awareness Campaigns • Systems/Policy Changes

MHTF at Ciclovía!
We were proud to join this community event, creating a car-free space where families can bike, walk, move, and enjoy the outdoors together.

Let’s keep Lawrence moving!

Welcome, August!
August is National Breastfeeding Month!
The Mayor's Health Task Force, through the Lawrence REACH Project, is working to strengthen breastfeeding continuity of care by advancing systems and policy changes that help local employers create breastfeeding-friendly workplaces. Together, we're building a community where families have the support they need to meet their breastfeeding goals - at home, in healthcare settings, and at work. Are you a Lawrence employer? We'd love to connect! Contact us to learn how your workplace can support breastfeeding employees.

If you're planning your return to work after having a baby, you may be wondering how you continue feeding your baby breastmilk. Take these steps to help make the transition smoother for you and your baby:

We had a great time visiting the farmers market today and connecting with community members about the benefits of shopping local.

If you receive SNAP/EBT benefits, don't forget to use your card at participating farmers markets to take advantage of your Healthy Incentives Program (HIP) dollars. It's a great way to bring home fresh fruits and vegetable!

Proud of Elecia Miller and our collaboration with Lawrence Sports Alliance

!

Last week, Elecia Miller of the Mayor's Health Task Force of Lawrence represented the City and the Lawrence Sports Alliance (LSA) on the "Rise Up MASS" panel at Aspen Institute Sports & Society Project Play Summit, alongside 875 youth sports advocates, nonprofit leaders, and others. She brought great insight and energy to the panel discussion.

Why are we rising? Collaboration.

Elecia shared how powerful it can be when organizations start building together. She highlighted opportunities created through partnerships between LSA, its member sports groups, the City's Healthy Active Living Workgroup, and the Lawrence Recreation Department. For this panel, she spotlighted efforts making a real difference on the ground, including "Champion Her Game," that's improving sports access and equity for girls across Lawrence, and how Mass in Motion through Safe Routes to Schools is helping kids not only get to school safely, but also reach parks, fields, and recreational spaces in their neighborhoods!

One of our favorite takeaways: when the right people are at the table, and we align our skills with our shared passions, we can accomplish so much more together. And yes, she had a room of 100+ people laughing while delivering that message, too. 😄

Thank you, Elecia, for representing the City and LSA so well! 💙⚽🏀🏈⚾🎾🏐🏉🎱🏓🏸🥊🏆
