The birds at the Anne Demarais Nature Center await you!

A study from King’s College London found that hearing birds, seeing them, and having ordinary encounters with birds improved the mood of people who have depression, and of the broader population as well.

We just completed the inaugural “First Saturday Walk.” Pictured here: David Bosted tells of the Boy Scouts’ science project that created the walkways along the paths. We all got a mile’s worth of steps in, while stopping to examine ferns and other plants on the floor of the forest here.

We had a wonderful evening learning about "Meteorites: Rocks from the Sky" during our "Tuesday Nights are Family Nights" Program, held at the Anne Demarais Nature Center. About 20 amateur geologists of all ages enjoyed Professor Duffy's expert stories about rocks and meteorites from more than 4 billion years ago!

It was really cool to hold a rock that fell to the earth so many millions of years ago. And as a bonus, Professor Duffy brought a few rocks that came from Mars. It really showed us what an amazing and immense universe we are part of. And after the session we had fun walking (and running) around the meadow and grounds surrounding the center. And it didn't rain!

Our First Saturday walk for July ... "I Spy ... Birds!" was a huge success. We walked the meadow and trails of Drexel Woods, spotting close to ten species of birds. we were able to identify the birds by their songs and catch a glimpse of them with our binoculars.

I spy...Birds!
With their bright colors, acrobatic flight, and beautiful song, birds have long inspired humans in poetry, art, and science. The Lawrence Nature Center has a variety of habitats - meadow, forest, and stream - that make for a good diversity of bird species to observe. We'll start in the meadow where it's easier to see birds and then proceed to the forest where we have to depend on our hearing to identify them by sound and, if we're lucky, by sight. Come learn how to identify birds of the Nature Center, learn a bit about their natural history, and recite bird-themed poetry and prose. Hikers of all ages are welcome, but children under age 8 must have an adult present. Please bring binoculars if possible; we'll have a few extras to loan out if needed.

In late March 2022, as the skunk cabbage was beginning to blossom, a group of local residents walked the Big Woods, much like Aldo Leopold did many years ago in Lawrence Township, New Jersey. The hike was part of a series of events celebrating Aldo Leopold Week in partnership with the Aldo Leopold Foundation. As a member of The Lawrenceville School's Class of 1905, Leopold documented his insights into natural history as formative experiences in developing his land ethic. Notably, Leopold referred to the forest west of Rider University today as the Big Woods. Tree-ring data recently collected by Rider University students and other historical evidence confirm the location of this forest and reveal that it has been present since at least the mid-nineteenth century. Knowing the locations of these forests, like Leopold’s Big Woods, not only enables a greater appreciation for the landscape that he wrote extensively about in letters home, but also provides an opportunity to document the long-term environmental changes that have occurred over the past 110 years in central New Jersey. Today, Leopold’s legacy continues to inform and inspire us to see the natural world “as a community to which we belong.”
