During a recent Storytime session at the Brearley House, children listened as our Junior Historians read aloud from "Washday" by Eve Bunting. Afterwards, the children had a chance to practice their own washday skills, using a real washboard to wash some clothes (with bubble bath, of course!).

We're told that one child subsequently asked his mother, "When we go home, can we do some chores?" :) An unintended benefit, we suppose, of Storytime participation.

Think your child may want to join in the fun? This Saturday we're having the final session of the month, this time with a Halloween theme, so all children are encouraged to come in costume.

Pre-registration, although not required, is preferred. To pre-register, click here: https://tinyurl.com/lhsstory

Tanner Lecture attendees were in for a real treat last night as Prof Melissa Ziobro gave a fascinating talk about the US Army Signal Corps' World War I "Hello Girls". The robust Q&A which followed clearly showed how engaged the audience was.

This was the second year the Society's Tanner Lecture was held at the high school and co-sponsored by the school's Academy of Arts & Humanities. It was great to see so many high school students in attendance.

: Today, and everyday, we recognize Indigenous peoples' deep-rooted cultural ties with the land now occupied by the United States of America. New Jersey is home to three recognized Native American tribes - the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape, the Ramapough Lenape, and Powhatan Renape. They are the traditional stewards of this land known as "Lenapehoking," or "Land of the Lenape."

This map demonstrates the diverse dialects used by the Lenni Lenape. Keep the language alive and learn more by visiting the Lenape Language Preservation Project website: https://delawaretribe.org/services-and-programs/language-revitalization/

MANY thanks to Debbie Schaeffer, Pete Foerst and the rest of the amazing staff at Mrs. G Appliances. The Society has had a refrigerator in the Brearley House which one could kindly call “vintage”. Mrs G’s came to the rescue and most generously agreed to donate a new refrigerator, which we’ve now fully stocked with refreshments for our volunteers and perishables for our events.

It’s great to have such a terrific local retailer right here in Lawrence. Thank you, Mrs. G!
