A big thank you to Leslie Marchio, a Food Network competitor and owner of , for teaching patrons how to decorate holiday cookies during this week's Cook Talks program! Attendees learned different icing techniques to create a gingerbread man, a festive tree, a candy cane, and a gingerbread house.

Join us for our next Cook Talks at the Lawrence Branch where we will learn how to make "mug cakes." Patrons will choose between chocolate, vanilla, nutella or spice cake flavors to practice making their own mug cake. Both events are sponsored by the Friends of the Lawrence Library.

"The American woods have been unnerving people for 300 years. The inestimably priggish and tiresome Henry David Thoreau thought nature was splendid, splendid indeed, so long as he could stroll to town for cakes and barley wine, but when he experienced real wilderness, on a visit to Katahdin in 1846, he was unnerved to the core." - Bill Bryson, A Walk in the Woods

The Lawrence Branch celebrated the last night of Hanukkah with joy and light on December 14th. The branch was honored to have Rabbi Adler, from Adath Israel Congregation in Lawrenceville, share with us the history and meaning of Hanukkah. He also led us in lighting all eight candles of the menorah, symbolizing the miracle of the oil. A roomful of adults and children joined in singing songs with cantor Arthur Katlin, and enjoyed kosher jelly donuts. Some people took home the popular dreidel game with chocolate coins. Thank you, Rabbi Adler, for visiting!

Welcome to Tuesday Night Trivia!

First, some simple rules.
1. Have a paper and pencil ready to write your answers down. DON'T POST YOUR ANSWERS!!!
2. The moderator will post all 10 questions as a pdf at the beginning of each round.
3. You are on the honor system not to use the Internet or anything other than your own brains to answer questions.
4. You can play on a team, which should be comprised of NO MORE THAN 5 PLAYERS.
5. At the end of each 10-question round, the moderator will say "Pencils Down!" and then post the answers to that round’s questions. You can then score yourself for the round - 1 point per correct answer for a maximum of 10 points each round. IF YOU ARE PLAYING ALONE multiply your final score by 1.2. (E.g., 10 correct answers would be worth TWELVE points.)
6. At the end, let us know how you did! Whoever has the highest score will be declared the winner and the prize will be: Bragging rights!
7. If there is a tie, there will be a tiebreaker round for the teams that tied.
8. Most important rule: Have FUN!!

Okay, everyone ready? Round one coming up...

Andrew's Monday Movie Review - "Get Carter"

A cult British gangster film. Michael Caine plays a man searching for answers and revenge. Before I had seen it, I imagined it would be something like a James Bond film. I was wrong. The circumstances of the plot, and the way it plays out, are grim. There is a lot of tension as our protagonist violently smokes through the underworld of industrial England.

Read this week's , "Enter the Aardvark: A Novel" by Jessica Anthony!

Fiction: Early one morning, Congressman Alexander Paine Wilson is planning his reelection campaign when a mysterious delivery arrives at his townhouse. Inside is a gigantic taxidermied aardvark. What does it mean? The story hurtles between present day Washington, DC, where Wilson tries to get rid of the unsightly beast before it destroys his career, and Victorian England, where readers meet the aardvark's taxidermist and the naturalist who hunted her, and learn the secret that binds them all.
