RAILROAD SOUTH FIRE UPDATE – AUGUST 30, 2026 8:40 PM

The Railroad South Fire is currently estimated at 515 acres and 30% contained. Forward progression has been stopped, and fire crews continue suppression, mop-up, perimeter reinforcement, and monitoring for hot spots or renewed fire activity.

There are no evacuation orders or traffic control points in effect, all previously reported power outages have been restored, and shelter operations have been deactivated. Damage assessments are complete, confirming 7 structures impacted — 5 destroyed and 2 with minor damage. Three civilians were transported for medical care.

One first responder fatality has also been confirmed. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has publicly identified the fallen responder as Federal Wildlife Officer David Taylor.

As of 8:00 pm command has transitioned back to Indiahoma Fire Department, with local resources continuing to monitor and manage the fire toward 100% containment.

The response to the Railroad South Fire has included approximately 150 fire personnel operating 55 apparatus, along with 41 law enforcement/public safety personnel and 19 medical/EMS personnel operating 8 apparatus. EMS resources also provided responder rehabilitation services to 38 personnel.

We are deeply grateful for the extraordinary support provided by the communities of Cache and Indiahoma, local residents and businesses, volunteer fire departments, elected officials, the American Red Cross, and the many local, county, state, federal, and tribal agencies that supported this response. From donated water, Gatorade, snacks, care items, and meals to personnel, equipment, evacuation assistance, traffic control, medical support, and countless other needs, the community response has been tremendous.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is mourning federal wildlife officer David Taylor, 38 of Scio, Oregon, who is believed to have died while helping evacuate residents threatened by the Railroad South Fire.

Officer Taylor was going door to door alongside local emergency crews helping families get to safety. His last contact with dispatch came while he was helping a family evacuate their home. Evidence recovered from a structure where he was working to help a resident escape indicates that he died during the evacuation effort. Formal identification remains pending with the medical examiner.

Everything we know about David's actions reflects extraordinary courage, selflessness and devotion to duty.

Our hearts are with his family, friends, fellow officers and all who served alongside him. We will never forget his service.

🔥 RAILROAD SOUTH FIRE – AUGUST 30 UPDATE 2:00 PM

The Railroad South Fire is under control, but active fire operations continue today in the Indiahoma area of Comanche County.

The evacuation order has been lifted, all traffic control points have been removed, and shelters are no longer active. Residents may return to the affected area, but a heavy fire and law enforcement presence remains within the fire footprint.

Current confirmed impacts include 5 homes destroyed, 2 homes with moderate damage, and 3 civilians transported for medical care.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs has assumed the lead on the fire, with local, state, federal, and tribal resources continuing suppression operations. Crews are reinforcing firebreaks, extinguishing and monitoring hot spots, protecting structures, and watching for rekindle or renewed fire spread. Federal law enforcement is also assisting with the fire investigation.

⚠️ Please stay out of the affected area unless you are a resident. Fire apparatus, law enforcement vehicles, personnel, smoke, debris, and other hazards remain throughout the fire footprint.

Any public donations intended to support responding agencies should be coordinated directly through local Volunteer Fire Departments.

Grateful for Our First Responders

wildfire between Indiahoma and Cache was a brutal reminder of how fast things can turn out here — but it also reminded us exactly who we are as a community.
Numerous agencies from all over the region answered the call and worked side by side for hours to get this fire under control. We are beyond thankful for every community partner who stepped up, and for everyone still out there monitoring the situation right now.
At the same time, our hearts are heavy for the families who lost structures and more. That loss is real, and we won’t lose sight of it even as we celebrate the response.
Watching the outreach and support pour in over the last 16 hours has been a powerful reminder: no matter what comes our way, this community stands together when it matters most.
A special thank-you to my own staff, who never hesitated to answer the call and rushed in to support the agencies working this fire around the clock. I couldn’t be prouder of you.
To everyone who responded, who’s still out there, and who’s opened their hearts to our neighbors in need — thank you.

• Post Oak Road & Cache Road

These locations will remain restricted while firefighters continue working in the area.

Residents should also expect heavy firefighting activity along Old Cache Road. Fire apparatus, personnel, smoke, reduced visibility, debris, and other hazardous conditions may still be present.

Please use extreme caution, slow down, and give emergency personnel plenty of room to operate.

Emergency operations will continue overnight as fire crews transition personnel and resources for extended operations in the affected area.

CURRENT STATUS

The forward progression of the fire remains stopped; however, the incident is still active. Firefighters will continue suppression, structure protection, hot-spot extinguishment, monitoring, and securing the fire area throughout the night.

At this time, the following damages are confirmed:

• 5 homes destroyed
• 2 homes with minor to moderate damage

Damage assessments will continue as conditions allow.

8:25 PM Update

🚨 Railroad South Fire WILDLAND FIRE UPDATE 🚨

Firefighters have stopped the forward progression of the large wildland fire in the Cache area; however, the incident remains active, and crews continue suppression operations, structure protection, overhaul, and extinguishing hot spots.

Approximately 200 responders from fire, EMS, law enforcement, Emergency Management, federal agencies, tribal partners, and mutual-aid departments from multiple counties are supporting the response.

Current Information

• Residential structures have been lost. The total number damaged or destroyed has not yet been confirmed.
• Three civilians have been transported for medical care. Their conditions are unknown at this time.
• Damage assessments will continue as conditions allow.

Residents who have been displaced or need a safe location may utilize either shelter.

⚠️ Please continue to avoid the affected fire area. Do not enter evacuated or restricted areas until authorized by emergency officials. Follow all evacuation instructions and directions from law enforcement and Emergency Management personnel.

Although forward progression has been stopped, changing conditions may still result in renewed fire activity. Remain alert for additional emergency notifications and official updates.

Additional information regarding fire size, structure losses, injuries, evacuations, and incident status will be released as it is confirmed through Incident Command.

This Evacuation Order now includes all areas between Big Bow Road and 197th, and then East to Quanah Road and south to SW Lee Blvd. Northern boundary will be Rogers Lane and Southern Boundary will be SW Lee Blvd.

If you have received a Wireless Emergency Alert on your phone, please take action. This is a fast moving, dangerous fire. Do not drive into smoke, and remain aware of a heavy Public Safety presence.
