Pouring fats, oils, or grease down the drain? That’s a fast track to a sewer backup — and it eventually impacts our creeks and rivers.

When you’re cooking this holiday season, make sure to:
• Let grease cool and scrape it into the trash
• Wipe pans with a paper towel before washing
• Pour large amounts of oil into a disposable, sealable container
• Keep food scraps out of the sink — compost or trash them
• Never use the toilet as a backup disposal

Protecting our pipes protects our water. Easy steps = big impact.

How does runoff impact your water quality and the environment?
Runoff is created in many ways:

When it Rains
When you water your lawn or use water around your house
When you wash your car or sidewalks.

Being aware of what can be contained in that water as it leaves your property and travels into a storm drain or into the groundwater can help protect your drinking water, public waters, and the sewer system.

Gov. Kevin Stitt has declared May to be Flood Awareness Month.

Flooding causes billions of dollars in property damage and numerous deaths each year in the United States. However, many people are unaware that losses due to flooding are not covered under most homeowners or business insurance policies. The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) allows residents of participating communities to purchase affordable flood insurance in exchange for regulating floodplain development.
