BURN BAN IN EFFECT – COMANCHE COUNTY
The Comanche County Board of County Commissioners has officially declared a Burn Ban due to extreme fire danger conditions. This ban is effective immediately and will remain in place for 14 days, with the possibility of extension if conditions persist. Burn Ban 2-23-26
What’s Prohibited:

Outdoor burning of any kind (grass, brush, trash, campfires, bonfires)

Fireworks (including ignition of fireworks)

Uncontrolled open flames

What’s Allowed (with conditions):

Charcoal, propane, and natural gas grills (must be used over non-flammable surfaces and at least 5 feet from vegetation)

Certain welding/cutting operations (with fire suppression and wind limits)

Approved public fireworks displays (with proper authorization)

Violations may result in fines up to $500 and/or jail time.
This Burn Ban does not apply to federal land.
Conditions are dry, winds are unpredictable, and it only takes one spark. Let’s protect our homes, our neighbors, and our firefighters.

🔥 A Reality Check for Rural Wildfire Response
We know we’ve been talking about wildfire a lot lately — and there’s a reason.

This winter has brought:
• Heavy dormant fuels from a very wet spring and summer
• Warmer-than-normal temperatures
• Multiple fires already, including one large fire this week

In rural areas, wildfire response looks different.

All of the fire departments protecting rural Comanche County are volunteer-based — neighbors responding when the call comes in. They show up fast, they work hard, and they put themselves in harm’s way.

That’s why prevention matters so much right now.

A single spark can turn into a fast-moving fire long before help arrives.

Ready: Avoid activities that create sparks. Secure trailer chains. Don’t park in tall grass.
Respond: Report smoke or fire immediately. Give responders space to work.
Recover: Fires affect land, livelihoods, and people long after flames are out.

Wildfire prevention in rural Comanche County is a shared responsibility. Fewer preventable fires mean safer responders and safer communities.

Did you know?

Fort Sill and Lawton Fire Department are the only Paid fire departments in Comanche County. All other fire departments (20 in total) are comprised of volunteers with other jobs and family time that they must leave behind in order to respond to emergencies.

A volunteer fire department (VFD) is a fire department of volunteers who perform fire suppression and other related emergency services for a local jurisdiction. Volunteer and retained (on-call) firefighters are expected to be on call to respond to emergency calls for long periods of time, and are summoned to the fire station when their services are needed. They are also expected to attend other non-emergency duties as well (training, fundraising, equipment maintenance, etc.).

You can find more information at Comanchecounty.us under the residents tab.
