Yesterday, a family’s beloved dog was trapped inside a house fire.

Thanks to the training, teamwork, and dedication of everyone involved—from the fireground to veterinary care—this story had a happy ending.

We share this because moments like these remind us why we train, why we prepare, and why we serve. Protecting lives is at the heart of what we do, whether they walk on two legs or four.

We're grateful we were able to help and honored to serve this community every day.

Today, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice and dedication will never be forgotten.

As we gather with family and friends this Memorial Day, we encourage everyone to celebrate safely, look out for one another, and take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of today.

From all of us at Layton City Fire, we remember. 🇺🇸🔥

Layton City Fire Department Receives FIDO Bag Donation from The Fetch Foundation
LAYTON, Utah — May 8th, 2026
The Layton City Fire Department has been awarded five FIDO Bags through a donation from the Fetch Foundation as part of the organization’s national FIDO Bag Program.

The Fetch Foundation supplies fire departments with specialized pet emergency medical equipment designed to assist firefighters in providing lifesaving care to animals during emergencies such as structure fires, vehicle accidents, and rescue incidents.

Following a recent structure fire involving pet resuscitation efforts, as well as a separate emergency requiring the rescue and treatment of an injured dog, personnel from the Layton City Fire Department identified the need for enhanced equipment and training to better care for animals impacted by emergencies.

The Fetch Foundation also provided training materials for the kits. Layton City Fire Department is coordinating with a local veterinarian to further develop department-wide animal care and resuscitation training for firefighters. The equipment will be carried on department apparatus and available for immediate deployment by responding personnel.

Every year, our firefighters complete physical function testing designed to replicate the demands of the fire ground. One of those evaluations is our annual Tower Test — a timed course made up of multiple physical stations that challenge strength, endurance, and job performance under pressure.

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Search and Rescue K9 Cole.

Cole joined the Layton Fire family in December of 2013 alongside his handler, Captain Roxanne Bauman, and faithfully served our department and community for more than a decade. After recently turning 14 years old in February, Cole had officially retired from Search and Rescue responsibilities.

Throughout his career, Cole and Captain Bauman deployed many times with Utah Task Force 1, assisting with disaster recovery efforts and searching for victims both here in Utah and across the country. Closer to home, Cole was an important part of the Child Abduction Response Team (CART), helping search for lost and missing children throughout our community.

Beyond his incredible service, Cole was known for his energy, personality, and love for people. Whether greeting children during station tours, showing off his skills at open houses, or simply making his rounds through the station looking for attention and belly rubs, Cole brought joy to everyone around him. Even just last week, Cole proudly visited with a local preschool group during a station tour — creating smiles and memories for another generation of kids.

Cole was more than a working dog. He was family.

The entire Layton Fire Department will deeply miss his loyal companionship, dedication, and spirit. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Captain Bauman and her family during this difficult time.

Rest easy, K9 Cole. Thank you for your years of faithful service.
