From Sarah Hawkins, Legislative Chair, Minnesota Library Association:

We’re in the final stretch of the legislative session, and a $1.2 billion bonding agreement is now on the table. As negotiations continue, it’s critical that library funding remains a priority. We need your help RIGHT NOW!

If you’ve reached out before, please do it again. These final days are when decisions are made, and repeated outreach makes a real difference.

We’re asking all library advocates to contact your legislators and urge them to support funding for public library construction and renovation projects in the final bonding bill. Strong library investments mean stronger communities, expanded access, and long-term benefits statewide.

The final day to pass a bill is Sunday, May 17 at midnight, so time is short.

Reading is one of the fastest and most powerful ways to reduce stress even more effective than listening to music, drinking tea, or taking a walk. In just 6 minutes, it can slow your heart rate, ease muscle tension, and shift your brain into a calm, meditative state by lowering cortisol and quieting the amygdala. A landmark Yale study found that book readers have a 23% lower risk of death over 12 years compared to non-readers.

Unlike short-form content, deep immersion in books builds cognitive reserve, strengthens empathy through fiction, and enhances emotional intelligence and social connections all of which support longer, healthier lives. The benefits are dose-dependent: reading more than 3.5 hours per week delivers the greatest longevity advantage.
