Whole NHOats

Whole NHOats Whole NHOats is the unofficial name of grains raised and sold on the Nuessmeier farm. What the heck is a hulless oat?

Well, it's not really hulless, it's just that the hull stays on the stalk when you harvest the grain. Tim and Tom Nuessmeier are growing a delicious, high quality organic variety of this high-protein grain on their beautiful fifth-generation family farm in in Sharon Township, Minnesota, within shouting distance of their pastured pigs. They also grow a variety of other organic small grains, including triticale and rye, along with organic soybeans and corn.

So, friends, every day choose to do something that does not compute..Embrace all that you cannot understand. Ask the questions that have no answers..Put your faith in the two inches of top soil that will build under the trees every thousand years..Love the world..Invest in the millennium. Plant sequoias! Say that your main crop is the forest that you did not plant—that you will not live to harvest. Say the leaves are harvested when they have rotted into the mold. Call that your profit..And laugh. Laughter is immeasurable! Be joyful though you have considered all the facts..Practice redemption..
—excerpted from Wendell Berry’s “The Mad Farmer, a Manifesto..”

Walking is the great adventure, the first meditation, a practice of heartiness and soul primary to humankind. Walking is the exact balance between spirit and humility.

In honor of Earth Day, a passage by the author Mary Oliver, celebrating and discovering the earth in her own unique way
“..Deep in the woods, I tried walking on all fours. I did it for an hour or so, through thickets, across a field, down to a cranberry bog. I don’t think anyone saw me! At the end, I was exhausted and sore, but I had seen the world from the level of the grasses, the first bursting growth of trees, declivities, lumps, slopes, rivulets, gashes, open spaces. I was some slow old fox, wandering, hitching along, lying down finally at the edge of the bog, under the swirling rick-rack of the trees. You must not ever stop being whimsical! And you must not ever give anyone else the responsibility for your life!”
—from the essay, “Staying Alive”, excerpted from the book, “Blue Pastures”
