City of Lead

City of Lead First Settled in 1876 and incorporated in 1877, the City of Lead is a sparkling jewel nestled in the Norther Black Hills of South Dakota.

Long the home of the great Homestake Mining Co. Lead boasts small town charm with large potential. The Homestake Mine has now been shut down and but the Sanford Underground Laboratory at Homestake is in full development and promises a living future for the community.

Lead Historic Preservation is excited to announce our Patriotic Decoration Contest for both businesses and residents!

Now is the time to start planning your red, white, and blue displays. Be sure to order your city bunting before June 16 and get decorating!

🏆 Prizes will be awarded to the Top 3 Residential entries and Top 3 Business entries.

🌸🌿 Help Lead Bloom! 🌿🌸

Join us Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at Prospect Park for a community beautification project! We’re looking for volunteers to help plant the gardens and make our city even more beautiful for this special year of celebration.

If you’re available, bring your work gloves and a spade or shovel if you have one, and come lend a hand. Every volunteer makes a difference, and together we can create something everyone will enjoy all season long!
